I'm a PITT fan the only reason I visited this thread was because I thought one you PSU of basketball apologists would be on here proclaiming that PSU b-ball is back and that Dechellis is a good coach, then I would have something to laugh about pretty much all day.
Not too many PSU fans of the last 15 years really care about Pitt, and only really think about them when it's brought to their attention or the idiot Pittsburgh (and western PA) press brings the whole issue up.
Seeing how much attention Pitt gets from PSU fans on this board, I'd say that's not quite accurate. If you truly didn't care, you would never say anything about Pitt, good or bad.

"Not too many..."

I think it's fair to say that most current PSU students, and those Alums from the past decade, really could care less if PSU ever played Pitt in football again.

At Penn State home football games, do PSU fans ever chant derogatory things about Pitt? If they do, then they're still interested.

No, unless they were playing Pitt. Funny, at the Orange Bowl I didn't hear one thing about Pitt. At the Ohio State game this year, not one thing about Pitt. Heck, the only game(s) I was at, or watched, that I heard anything about Pitt, was when Pitt was getting taken apart by Ohio University in Athens this past year, and when I was watching Slaton and White each take turns running for an average of 15 yards on first down against Pitt.

Since you seem to spend countless hours combing PSU sites, like FOS, see how many people respond to threads of the general topic "Who would you like to see PSU schedule?" You might find a few who say Pitt, but if you're talking Big East, I would say that far more PSU fans would rather see PSU play WVU than Pitt. After that, for out of conference, Notre Dame, Florida State, Tennessee, Alabama, USC, Nebraska, more so than Pitt.

Again, for the most part, it's only the insanity known as the Pittsburgh sports media that consistently brings up the PSU vs. Pitt scheduling debate. They should be spending their time figuring out how they will deal with WVU, and holding them to under 800 yards of rushing, in each game for the next 20 years.

Two comments Frostlion:

I'll agree with your statement "I think it's fair to say that most current PSU students, and those Alums from the past decade, really could care less if PSU ever played Pitt in football again" but add to it that the same could be said about current Pitt students and recent alumni.

I will guarantee you though, if the survey you mention was given to those in the 35+ age bracket Pitt would be #1 on most Penn State alumns and fans surveys and the same would be said for Pitt. And to think that WVU would be higher on the survey results of who the #1 rivalry was for Penn State I believe is totally inaccurate. WVU would rate the #1 rivalry to the 35+ crowd moreso on Pitt survey's of "who they would like to play most" than Penn States.

Bottom line is the younger generation doesn't care about the series because they didn't live it. They don't know that this was at one time just as intense as any rivalry in the country so they don't know any better.

Your other statement:

"Again, for the most part, it's only the insanity known as the Pittsburgh sports media that consistently brings up the PSU vs. Pitt scheduling debate."

Not so fast Frostlion, The Altoona Mirror (Penn State market) and Penn State beat writer Neil Rudel ran an article no more than a month ago asking for renewal of the series now that there was a 12th game and the writer offered a compromise to the idiotic 2:1 Penn State "offer" with a 10 year 6 At PSU 4 At Pitt "plan" that I actually thought was very well thought out and reasonable.

They cared enough last year to chant "Penn State Sucks!" as their team was getting blown out by Fresno State.

I was to 4 games this year, 2 at home and 1 on the road, and the Orange Bowl. Anytime they would announce scores, the Pitt game would come and go and there would be a few cheers/boo's if they were losing/winning. In 2004 when I worked at all the Pitt/Steeler games at Heinz field, any time the game scores were announced, and Penn State was brough up and losing(which they did a lot in 2004), you'd swear Pitt scored a t.d. with all 50,000 people "packed" into Heinz Field cheering the score. I think the "rivalry" is very much alive in the Pitt fans minds, and it's all but dead in the PSU fans.

Just a view I've seen by experiencing both places and attitudes in the last 2 years. Disagree if you like.

Roadie makes some sense, but:

I didn't speak of the concept of who was the bigger rivalry, Pitt or WVU, but that I feel if you were to ask PSU fans in general today who they would rather play, WVU or Pitt, most would say WVU.

My best (most recent example) of the Pittsburgh Sports media is this clown Bob Smizik.

Who would I like to see Penn State schedule? Let's take a radius of 200 miles from State College. Syracuse, St. Johns, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. Joseph's, Penn, Temple, Maryland, Virginia, WVU, Georgetown, George Mason, George Washington, Hofstra, Bucknell all to name a few. Instead they go to Lousiana to find Nicholls State, to Missouri to find UMKC, to Indiana to find IPFW. PSU will schedule Temple in football, but avoid this natural opponent in basketball..... Now, will Penn State fans be rooting for Pitt to lose in the NCAA's? If so, the rivalry still exists.

Maybe they just want the kids to be well-rounded and experience different cultures.

As for football, I've never heard ONE chant at Beaver Stadium that was against Pitt unless Pitt was playig there as well. And I've probably been to more games than ANY of you have.

There are way more cheers for ND trailing or losing than for Pitt.
