Please delete that photo of him as the Statue of Liberty. Don't give Spanier and that AD any ideas.

PATERNO is holding Penn State hostage

"I don't even care if I get a contract," he said in his first news conference with reporters in three months. "I'll be very frank with you. I think the university will do what it thinks is right whenever the time comes. Right now, I'm very comfortable.

"If I've got to have a contract to keep my job here, I'm in the wrong place."

The 81-year-old Paterno, the second winningest coach in Division I history behind Florida State's Bobby Bowden, recently met with president Graham Spanier and athletic director to Tim Curley to discuss his future and a possible succession plan.

Two members of Penn State's Board of Trustees told the Post-Gazette the meeting did not go smoothly.
Paterno disputed that.

"We talked about what the situation was because there was some pressure on some people about doing something," he said. "I have no problem. I'm not looking for a contract. I'm not looking for anything."

What I am afraid of concerning Penn State (I mean, as of RIGHT NOW, because 5 mins from now I'll be concerned about something else with that program) is that Paterno will get commits and then announce late in the offseason that he's leaving. You need to name a successor. You don't want Paterno's recruits jumping ship at the last second.

Look, we all know how this plays out. Bradley takes over as head coach. McQueary and Jay split the O-Coor. duties. Larry Johnson takes over as D-Coor. Then, after 3-4-5 years of Bradley not doing anything, which I think there is a large possibility of that happening (just a hunch), Jay takes over as head coach. 10 years later he gets fired and they hire an outside coach. They are NOT going to hire an outside coach when Joe leaves. Look at how it all played out at Michigan and Nebraska when they tried to go outside the program. Kids leave, slander the school, and the fans go nuts. Penn State will retain that whole staff. Unfortunately.
