Keystone State Gridiron Notes: P.I.A.A. Semifinal Facts:

"2008" marks the 21st year of the P.I.A.A. State playoffs. Here are some notes to keep in mind this weekend during the P.I.A.A. semifinals:

Eighty-four different P.I.A.A. reps have won at least one P.I.A.A. semifinal, Eastern or Western. No P.I.A.A. affiliate has won both East and West finals, though Bishop McDevitt, Bellwood-Antis, West York Area, and Wilson-West Lawn have played or will play in both.

Archbishop Wood, West Catholic, Bethel Park, Lancaster Catholic, and Selinsgrove are each making their first-ever P.I.A.A. (semifinals) appearance.

Farrell and Wilmington have played in P.I.A.A. semifinals for two different geographic districts. Both have represented the W.P.I.A.L. and District #10. The only eastern team with such a distinction is Mount Carmel, which represented Districts #11 and #4.

Speaking of District #4, Selinsgrove is making the district's first "(AAA)" Eastern Finals appearance in "17" years. Shamokin lost to Conestoga Valley in 1991, 28-20. In (29) all-time appearances in the P.I.A.A. semifinals, District #4 is 20-9 (.689). Mount Carmel and Southern Columbia have "17" of the "20" victories.

Wilson and Lancaster Catholic are the latest representatives from the Lancaster-Lebanon League to reach the P.I.A.A. (semifinals). Wilson is making its third appearance; Catholic, its first. Other previous L-L League reps that have played in P.I.A.A. (semifinals) include Manheim Central, Conestoga Valley, Cocalico, and Lampeter-Strasburg.

L-L League reps are just 4-11 in P.I.A.A. (semifinals). District # 3, as a whole, is 11-31 in P.I.A.A. (semifinals).

The W.P.I.A.L. is 60-18 all-time in P.I.A.A. semifinals. Only two Western Finals have pitted two~ non-W.P.I.A.L. schools against each other - the "1988" "(A)" and "2004" "(AA)" semifinals.

Seventy-five schools have made only one appearance in a P.I.A.A. (semifinal) game. Such schools' overall record is 30-45. Eastern schools with such a distinction are 10-19 all-time; Western schools are 20-26.

Something will have to give in the Class "(A)" Western Final between Clairton and Farrell - Clairton is 0-2 in P.I.A.A. (semifinals); Farrell is 3-0.

North Penn and Bethlehem Liberty are playing in the "(AAAA)" Eastern Final. It's the 13th time Districts # 1 and # 11 have met in the semifinals. District # 1 holds an 8-4 edge, but District # 11 has won four of the last six meetings......
