Bowl game predictions

I am going to stick to the only three that I really care about. Feel free to add others.

BCS Championship:

Oklahoma 42 Florida 31

I think this will be a great game. I am not sold on the Big 12 defenses that Oklahoma has been dismantling. However, I am less sold on the SEC as a great conference this year. I think the fact that Alabama was in the SEC championship shows more about how weak LSU and Auburn are than how good Alabama is. The same can be said for Florida and the SEC East with Tennessee and Georgia. I can't see a Florida defense without a senior starter slowing down Oklahoma. The game two years ago makes me wary, when Florida completely shut down a potent OSU offense. But that Florida team started 9 seniors on D and Oklahoma has a much better offense than OSU did.

Rose Bowl:

USC 24 Penn State 14

I could see this game being a USC rout, like every other USC vs. Big 10 game for the past 8 years. Or I could see PSU keeping this close by containing the USC offense. So I will split the difference. I don't think the Spread HD will pose problems for USC's defense, so I think it is on the Penn State defense to keep them in the game. The need to get pressure on Sanchez, because he is not great when pressured. They also need to force some turnovers. My gut tells me that USC will be prepared and motivated for this game. If that is the case, PSU will be dominated. However, if USC comes out expecting an easy game (possible after the way they beat OSU), PSU could surprise them.

Fiesta Bowl:

OSU 28 Texas 24

This is strictly a fan's pick. However, I really like OSU's chances in this game. Texas is a team that they are familiar with and that their defense has contained in the past. In the two meetings in 2005 and 2006, Texas averaged 16.0 ppg. This is a different Texas team, but I think it will give OSU some confidence. I also like the extra weeks of practice that Pryor will get before this game. If the OSU defense cannot contain Texas, this will not be close, but if they can, and I think they can, I think they can win. Everyone talks about the motivation for Texas after the snub, but OSU has similar motivation. A win over a team that many believe should be in the title game would restore some respect for the program.

I really hope that OSU and PSU win for the sake of the Big 10. The conference has not had a big win in a BCS bowl in quite a while. I think the last one was OSU over Kansas State in 2004.

Florida 45 Mobilehoma 35

Perfect score. Tim Tebow will have no trouble carving this defense apart. I am sure Urban Meyer has studied the OU vs. UT game. OU is very weak at the linebacker position due to injuries. They are pretty good up front, but after that their defense can be had. If Percy Harvin is healthy, Florida may put up even more than 45. Bob Stoops will lose another BCS Bowl Game. What a surprise.

USC 21 PSU 7

I will change my score to please the PSU fans on the board. I don't see any way PSU finds a way to score in this game. Daryll Clark disappears against good defenses. 12-20 for 121 yards against Ohio State. 9-23 for 86 yards and an INT against Iowa. Neither one of those defenses are as good as USC. How is he going to fare in this game? Obviously, it won't be well. USC does not have the offense we are accustomed to seeing this year, but I have a feeling McKnight could have a big game. This one will be a defensive battle, but USC will get a few big plays that will lead to scores.

Texas 35 Ohio State 17

I think Texas has too much offense for Ohio State. I am sure Colt McCoy will be looking for some revenge after Ohio State had their way with him at DKR a few years back. Jim Tressel will have to take the training wheels off of Pryor to keep this one close. I would be very afraid of a letdown from Texas if Will Muschamp was not on the staff. I know he will have his defense fired up and ready to play in this one. I think it could be a little closer than I predicted if Tressel lets Pryor do some more things with the football. I still think Texas comes out a winner.

Don't do it to please me bud. Put your money where your mouth is. You said USC would win 28-0. Don't back out now.

I think somebody realized the game will be closer than they originally thought.

I am not a big fan of the Fiesta Bowl matchup. I think this is a lose/lose situation for Texas. The least the BCS could have done was match them up against to another 1 loss team to see if they were truely worthy to play in the championship game. The same goes for Alabama and I know they play an undefeated Utah team, but this is Georgia vs. Hawaii all over again. Now Texas gets a 2 loss Ohio State team. Ohio State is a great program and I know this is a sexy matchup and it will be a big game, but as a college football fan I wanted something different. If they win big, it is expected and we will be questioning how they would have faired against a better opponent. If they lose, they will be looked on as a team that really didn't deserve to go to the big game in the first place. I can see Texas being flat and not interested in this game and feeling as though there was something bigger out there for them. Thats the perfect formula for a let down. They should be matched up against Alabama, PSU, or USC.

Also, I think the bowl tie-ins are boring at this point. I'm tired of the Big 10/Pac 10 Rose Bowl. I'm not saying its a bad matchup, but we have seen this before. USC vs. Alabama would have been outstanding and Texas vs. PSU would have been great. Its just the same old, same old.

Why can't I change my mind almost a month before the game? The more I thought about it I didn't think USC could score 28. I will put my money on USC covering the spread. I am almost positive that will happen unless PSU finds a better offense than they had against Iowa.

My pick was pretty good for the first half. The second half will be worth watching, though. Will Sanchez throw for 500 yards? Will USC score 60? JoePa really had his boys ready. Do you remember how good he is with a month to prepare?
