Matt Cavanaugh was a senior in the 1977 football season, the year after Pitt won the National Championship. I was in the stands at Pitt Stadium that year for the season opener against Notre Dame. Pitt lost the game 19-9 to ND, the eventual National Champions that year. During the game, Cavanaugh broke his wrist. He was replaced by a kid named Wayne Adams, who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn that day, and fumbled the snap from center countless times. What a horrible day, especially after Pitt jumped out to a 7 point lead. The next game a young kid from Youngstown was under center for the Panthers. It was Rick Trocano and the rest was history. Cavanaugh did come back later in the season and led Pitt to a 34-3 victory over Clemson in the Gator Bowl, which was a prestigious bowl game in those days, unlike the million bowls we have today.

Sorry about that I knew that he was on the team when Pitt won the National Championship in 1976. I just thought he was a senior.

I "think" TAE meant when did he leave the coaching staff; ie. quit/resign/fired......... That is how I read it. I also read today that he wont be back.

Thats right, Shocker. In today's Mirror John Meno had a writeup saying how Walt Harris is looking for a high school job in the area and would be a bad fit if the came back to Pitt as offensive coordinator, replacing the recently departed Cavanaugh. I had no idea Cavanaugh left, how did Pitt keep this so quiet?
