Shade punches ticket to Sweet "16"
From MIKE MASTOVICH...
Shade earned a trip to the P.I.A.A. boys basketball Sweet 16 with a 60-47 victory over Neshannock on Friday at the U.P.J. Sports Center.
Joel Kaminsky had "24" points, including eight of eight from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, to lead the District # 5 Class (A) Champions to what is believed to be their first state playoff win, according to coach Wade Fyock.
Garrett Berkey had "10" points, and Tyler Smith grabbed eight rebounds and had nine points for the 23-3 Panthers. Neshannock, the District # 7 fourth-place team, finished 17-8.
“We got some good stops defensively,” Shade coach Wade Fyock said. “We rebounded the ball well the whole game. Definitely, hitting some foul shots down the stretch, those are the types of things you need to do. For the most part, we were pretty good.”
Shade will play District #7 W.P.I.A.L. Runner-up Serra Catholic, a 84-56 winner over District #6 third-place Conemaugh Valley Friday, on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
Neshannock was led by Bobby Nittinger and Joey Fontana, who each scored "15" points. The Lancers missed leading scorer Tony Kirkwood, who averaged about "19" points a game.
“This was a strange game to prepare for,” Fyock said. “I knew their leading scorer was going to be out. I had seen some good things from every one of their players at different points when I watched numerous tapes. I knew it was going to be a tough match up.”
Shade never trailed in the game, posting a 27-18 halftime advantage that extended to 41-31 entering the final quarter.
“We’ve never won a state playoff game,” Fyock said. “This is a first...”
