NCAA Honors 47 BIG EAST Teams For Academic Excellence
PROVIDENCE ? The NCAA honored 712 Division I sports teams with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores ? 47 of which compete as participating members of the BIG EAST Conference.
The BIG EAST’s 47 teams lists it third among all Division I Conferences. The Ivy Group (150) and Patriot League (89) were ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
The teams recognized this year represent 11.4 percent of the 6,272 Division I teams. The list includes 401 women’s teams and 311 men’s or mixed squads.
A total of 192 Division I institutions had at least one team on the top APR list. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000 over the data collection period.
“Congratulations to these teams and their student-athletes for success in the classroom,” NCAA President Myles Brand said. “They are setting a great example for their peers and future student-athletes, as well.”
The effort is part of a public-recognition program the Division I Board of Directors approved in January 2006.
Last year, a total of 839 teams were recognized, last year 712 were honored - and this year the number was 767.
Among BCS conference schools the BIG EAST Conference ranked first with 60 teams honored.
The football teams at Minnesota and Mississippi, which lost three scholarships apiece, were the only teams in power conferences to face penalties.
Nine men's basketball teams from power conferences were subject to penalties, including Ohio State, which lost two scholarships for next year largely because of players leaving mid-semester to train for the NBA draft.

The University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department’s dedication to academic success was evident in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) report released Wednesday by the NCAA.
The APR is a “real time” measure of academic performance developed by NCAA. It rewards points for retention, eligibility and graduation on a term-by-term basis each year.
Today’s report reflected the four-year averages for each team during the academic years 2004-05 through 2007-08. Each of Pitt’s teams well surpassed the APR minimum score requirement of 925.
Teams that regularly underperform in the APR can receive penalties ranging from public warning to financial aid, practice and competition scheduling restrictions.
Pitt’s tennis and gymnastics teams were recognized for achieving among the top 10% of other Division I teams in their sport. Both teams earned the maximum score possible of 1000. Additionally, the Panthers’ men’s basketball team achieved among the top 20% of Division I.
Overall, no Pitt team was within 12 points of the minimum score.
“Today’s report is a great reflection of the priorities of the University of Pittsburgh,” Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said. “Graduating our student-athletes from this outstanding institution is the number one goal. A Pitt degree has never been more valuable, and it is always a satisfying conclusion to a year when we see our senior student-athletes wearing their caps and gowns with diploma in hand.
