For years, one of the biggest gripes against the coaching staff has been their stubbornness with running 15-yd CB cushions. Sometimes you have to run things to fit your players talents, and I myself have been very unhappy over the recent years with the soft coverage on the outside. Now, finally, the staff might have 2 potential starters who can play man coverage and can play physically.
Knowledge Timmons came into this season with a new attitude, and he has played well. He is playing better than I figured, even. The same goes for Wallace, a former 5-star recruit. Both of them have taken the reigns and really made a go of it in their final offseasons. They are both playing better than I thought they would, but I do not think either of these kids is physical enough.
The reason why Timmons and Wallace are now battling for ONE spot, whereas they started as the two starters at CB, is bc of how well Lynn is playing.
Lynn is very technically sound. You may have noticed that Iowa and Illinois both stayed away from him. He is however not taking chances and is not creating turnovers. I think it is a very good sign that the staff wants Lynn to take more chances.
Stefon Morris is a true freshman, and I am being serious when I say that I personally believe he will either share time with Wallace and Timmons or else will win that position by season's end. The 2 seniors have Joe on their side, where he likes to play the seniors if there's a situation where he has to pick one player or another. Morris is now the Nickel and is playing very well. He is physical, aggressive, and also a lot more technically sound than most freshmen.
In 2010, it looks like PSU will finally have aggressive CBs that can play man coverage as well as zone. Its about *#+?#*+ time.
Now all of a sudden we get to find out if the problem was the previous players, or was it coaching philosophy that kept the corners in soft coverages? New secondary coach Kermit Buggs might have something to do with this. But I am very curious if the problem was the players, or was it Bradley being way too conservative?
