good Junior High teams this year. I know, I know, no one cares about Junior High basketball but I retired a couple of years ago and like to attend the games when I get a chance. It is interesting to see a kid play in 9th grade and see how he progresses as he goes through high school. I love to attend high school games, but now with more time on my hands, I've really enjoyed going to the 9th grade games late in the afternoon before the older guys play. In any case, I just was wondering if there were any really good teams who will be worth making an effort to see this year (like Johnstown last year and Hollidaysburg 2 seasons ago). I like to see the better teams if I can, because as we all know, some of the junior high games can be quite tedious when the skills of the players aren't that developed.
Sorry for the length of the message, I just wanted to get insight from someone who might know something about the up and coming players at the junior high level. Thanks in advance for any insight offered.

Go watch a WeakPac VARSITY boys' game...The speed of those games is about the same, or a little slower than a freshman game between two good WPIAL AAAA FROSH teams...
I am not kidding when I say this: There are frosh teams in WPIAL AAAA who could place in the top 3 in the WeakPac, and in most years get into the 5A playoffs...

A quad A school should be able to beat up on little A schools.(even ninth graders occasionally).I recall shade beating a wpial team in the playoffs last year. Some on here gave them no chance along with tussey and northern because they were little district 5 schools.Make an apples to apples bash at least!

usatf...you misread my post...I said a FRESHMAN TEAM from a WPIAL AAAA school could be competitive in the WeakPac. The better frosh teams in AAAA could make the 5A playoffs.

Not really a misread, i did mention ninth graders and knew what you meant.Just stating occasionally the west pac does come up with a team to be reckoned with.Actually last year was one of the strongest single a years in a while in district 5.Didn't all 3 district 5 teams win their first round games in the playoffs? Not bad or really weak, especially whenthey did lose they were all close ones.

I would say McCort 9th grade best freshmen group this year

Somerset freshman are loaded, the varsity head coaches son is a guard, he's pretty good, they have another guard who can shot it, along with kids who have nice size and athleticism. McCort should could be ok, Johnstown will be down this year, but there'll be a fun team to watch, they have 4 guards that under 5 foot but they can drive and shoot. Richland has size and a tough 8th grader but lack guard play.
