Southern Miss to Big East? THE TIDAL WAVE IS STARTING.

Post by The Ancient Enemy »

Did I or did I not say years and years ago that the BE should have expanded to 12 and played a conference title game, and the 1st school they should have went after was Southern Mississippi? Had the BE listened to the wisdom of TAE, this would have already happened years ago.

Golden Eagles in the Big East?

Laurel Leader-Call

LAUREL — With the talk of the Big 10 Conference expanding to 12 teams, the Big East Conference would fall in line to expand their league. One of the rumors floating around Hardy Street these days is the simple fact Southern Miss could be going to the Big East.

The Golden Eagles could find out as soon as July if they will be making the switch from Conference USA to the Big East. It all depends on if the Big 10 decides to expand, which it appears they are close to doing.

The Big East is the current home to Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Rutgers, Connecticut, South Florida, Louisville, and Syracuse. From what I'm hearing, Cincy is a strong candidate to join the Big 10. If that happens, Southern Miss would be a shoo-in to take the Bearcats’ spot in the Beg East. Even if the move doesn't happen, Southern Miss is still in the running. The best possible teams for the move to the Big East would be Memphis, Central Florida, East Carolina, and USM.

A couple of things USM has going for them is the strength of the football program, and the baseball program. Let's face it, basketball is not the drawing point. Although, the women's team could benefit by playing some better competition.

How awesome would it be to see West Virginia, Pitt, Rutgers and Louisville in Hattiesburg? That would definitely sell out some games at "The Rock!" Oh by the way, it would also mean a jump in athletic funding. The current Southern Miss athletic budget is set at $27 million. The new budget in the Big East would be $50 million.

Looks like out of nowhere Southern Miss will soon be going undefeated and ranked 3rd in the country

At least they won't be in a basketball conference where you can only get 5 out of 11 teams to the Big Dance.

The Big 10 had more teams in the Sweet 16 this year than the Big East.

Hey, at least S. Miss will end up having a better chance at making the tournament. That's an anchievement in itself. Anything can happen once they get in.
