ICC Playoff Games (Week 11)
Posted: November 8th, 2010, 9:11 am
5-1 last week losing the Glendale-United matchup. 51-9 on the season
3 teams left in the ICC.
At this point they are all Games of the Week!
District 5 Semifinal
Conemaugh Township (8-2) @ Northern Bedford (10-0) (Stats do not include CT's last game as they are not on Maxpreps yet)
Conemaugh Township heads to NBC this Saturday night with a trip to the district finals on the line. Township is led by quarterback Hayden Stumpo. He has over 1000 yards passing on the season and his favorite target is Jordan Shroyer who has over 30 catches and 8 touchdowns on the year. CT's biggest threat is their running game led by stud tailback, Brett Byers. Byers has over 1300 yards on the year and has scored 21 touchdowns. The Panthers have shut down the running of everyone on the year except for Meyersdale's Hoover last week who got over 100 yards on them. Northern is led by Preston Albright, who now has 32 touchdowns on the year and over 1700 yards rushing. CT has shut down the run game of a lot of teams on the year. The more physical teams they have played, Windber, Ridge, and North Star have all been able to run on them. NS and Ridge both had two guys go over 100 yards against CT When they played. Both of these teams have good offenses. NB averages 37.5 and allows 9.0. CT averages 26.9 and allows 12.5. NBC faces the best offense they've faced on the year since Glendale. They are similar to Meyersdale in what they do, but they are better at it.

District 6 Quarterfinal Games
Portage(7-2) @ Juniata Valley (8-1)
Two teams that are mirror images of each other. Both are green and white and both run similar offenses with good running backs and real big quarterbacks. The main difference to me is that JV is more aggressive on defense and is more of a blitzing team. Statistically, Juniata Valley comes into this game with the better offense and the better defense in terms of points scored and points allowed. Taking a look at Maxpreps, you'll see that the Mustangs are closing in on two 1000 yard rushers on the year in Kostan and Noel. They also spread the ball around as 10 guys have catches on the year. The leading receiver and go to man is Andrew Blair. Juniata Valley has Weicenburg around 500 yards and their main man, Ethan Morrison, who has already gone over the 1000 yard mark on the year. Nick Carper is their main receiving threat. To me, I look at this game and wonder who knows the other's offense better and can stop it. Recently, Portage has been in some big games and they know how to win. I just feel like Juniata Valley is on the verge of having a couple of really great seasons themselves and they could have a few nice years of success like this one. Can they win a playoff game at home? I'll say they can. I just wonder if I'm being an ICC homer :?

Bishop McCort (6-4) at Bellwood (8-1)
I think everyone agrees this would have made a great final, but here it is in the quarterfinals. McCort started out 0-2 and they have come on strong since then going 6-2 over their final 8 games. They have obviously played the better schedule to this point which should have them prepared for the Blue Devils. If they played Bellwood's schedule, there is no doubt in my mind that they'd also be 8-1 so throw the records out the window. Throw all the stats I could post out the window too. It comes down to this, Bellwood and McCort are two well coached teams with loads of tradition. They know each other well and have met in the playoffs before. Coming into the year, both teams were supposed to be "down" from their normal expectations. Can Bellwood overcome the Crushers? Every public school in the area will be pulling for Bellwood once again. The public vs. private discussion will come up several times, I'm sure. I truly do not know what to think about this game other than I bet you will see a packed house in Bellwood on Friday night. The winner of this game is probably the favorite and if you've looked at the eastern bracket, might be a favorite all the way to the eastern finals. I'm picking with my heart on this one. Go Devils
