The high school wrestling season officially got underway for many local teams over the weekend.
North Star opened its season by going 5-0 in team matches at the Blairsville Duals on Saturday.
The Cougars finished in first place with victories over host Blairsville 54-21, Sheffield 65-12, Indiana 60-18, Moshannon Valley 64-12 and Central Cambria in the finals, 49-24.
Corey Fritch, Tayte Mostoller, Nick Roberts, Gearmo Smeak, Lance Shawley, Neil Yoder and Cody Stahl all went undefeated with 5-0 records to lead the Cougars.
“Winning the tournament was a pleasant surprise,” North Star coach Pat Berzonski said. “The guys wrestled aggressively. We had 30 falls on the day. Their conditioning looked really good, considering some of them have only been with us a few days. The hard work they’ve put in so far was evident.”
The Cougars’ next dual meet is scheduled for Dec. 21 in Boswell against Berlin.
Somerset placed second out of eight teams, behind only Edinboro’s General McClane, at the Philipisburg-Osceola J.J. Powell Mountaineer Tournament on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles had a trio of wrestlers in the finals. They were led by Nick Baer, who captured the 215-pound championship. Mike Laue and Josh Darr earned runner-up honors at 125 and 135, respectively.
Garrett Foster (103) and Mike Sutton (152) placed third, A.J. Ward (130) finished fourth, Landon Lohr (140), Phil Ickes (145), Jacob Nickelson (160), Pat Blough (189) and Jake Hayman (285) were fifth and Damian Jano (112), Tyler Walker (119) and Jon Baer (171) all took sixth.
Somerset opens its dual-meet season by hosting Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference power Westmont Hilltop on Tuesday.
A long-standing tradition continued in Davidsville as Conemaugh Township hosted its Holiday Tournament for the 43rd time on Saturday.
The annual event featured eight teams. Township was the only school from Somerset County that competed.
The Indians crowned one champion — Cory Berchick at 145 pounds. Mickey Sanders (103) and Tanner Cahill (140) both placed second while Kody Ofsanko (112), Scott Garetty (130) and Kyle Drenner (189) each took third.
Westmont Hilltop won the team title. Mount Union and Northern Garrett (Md.) rounded out the top three.
Conemaugh Township wrestles Berlin in dual-meet action Wednesday in Davidsville.
