The wayyyy too early look at the D5 A playoff possibilities

Post by Coach »

Just wondered how things were looking so I took a little look into the remaining schedules of the teams in D5. This is just for fun based on my best guesses and without injuries, etc that may happen in the remaining weeks which is huge in single A football. It at least gives us a look into the big picture.

Projecting District 5 after 4 weeks (T = tossup)

North Star- 3-1 They have the easiest remaining schedule after their huge game with Berlin this week. The only team they play I project with a winning record the rest of the way is Blacklick and perhaps Shade.
Remaining Schedule with projection- Berlin (T), Shade (w), Mey (w), Rockwood (w), BV (w), CT (w)
Projected record 8-2 or 9-1

Windber- 4-0 They have a tough remaining schedule that includes LV, Portage, and Berlin.
Remaining schedule with projection- LV (L), CT (w), Portage (T), Ferndale (w), CV (w), Berlin (L)
Projected record 8-2 or 7-3

NBC-4-0 They have a tough remaining schedule that includes West Branch Mt Union, Bellwood, and a AAA team.
Remaining schedule with projection- SH, Mt Un, WB, Bellwood, Williamsburg, AAA opponent (Bradford or Punxsutawney)
Projected record (I won't predict individual wins or losses for my own school... Based on records of opponents anywhere from 7-3 to 10-0 is probable)

Berlin
- 4-0 They have a tough remaining schedule including NS, NC, Shade, and Windber
Remaining schedule with projection- NS (T), NC (T), Shade (w), Mey (w), Rwood (w), Windber (w)
Projected record 10-0, 9-1, or 8-2

Tussey Mountain-
2-2 Tough schedule with lots of toss up games
Remaining schedule with projection- Williamsburg (w), Glendale (T), JV (L), CK (T), Mt Un (T), Mey (w)
Projected record 4-6 all the way to 7-3

Conemaugh Twp- 2-2 They have what may be the most brutal schedule. They have to pull an upset over someone to get in the playoffs. I don’t know if they can do it with these matchups. There are some great teams there. This week's game with BV is vital to their playoff chances.
Remaining schedule with projection- BV (L), Win (L), Homer Center (L), Portage (L), Ferndale (w), NS (L)
Projected record 3-7 or 4-6

Shade- 2-2 They look like they’ll be in the playoffs in 2012.
Remaining schedule with projection- CV (w), NS (L), Ber (L), Marion Center(T), Mey (w), Rwood (w)
Projected record- 5-5 or 6-4

Key notes- NBC and TM have AA wins over Everett. Mt Union is also AA and NBC plays host to a AAA team in week 10. Unless someone beats LV it doesn’t look like anyone else can get the extra AA points and will lose to NB or TM in a tiebreaker situation.

Early projection of the playoff seeds-
1. Berlin -They have the best shot at being 10-0, so I’ll project them here for now.
2. Northern Bedford They hold any tiebreaker over Ber, NS, or Windber so I’ll put them here. The AAA game could be scary right before playoffs.
3. North Star – If they lose to Berlin, they have a good shot at finishing 3rd and should finish 8-2. If they beat Berlin, they’ll likely go 9-1, moving to #1- and maybe bumping NB down a notch.
4. Windber – They are 4-0 but have a tough schedule remaining. I see them pretty set at #4 unless they pull off a big win over Berlin or NB loses 3.
5. Shade – They need to prove they belong and beat the teams they should. If they do, they look like the #5 team to me.
6. Tussey Mountain- We don’t know how good they are yet. They’ll have to beat the toss up teams to finish higher than 6th because Shade has a nicer end to their schedule.
7. CT- They’ll need to pull an upset to get in. Currently I have them on the outside looking in. If they get a 4th win I think it has to be over Blacklick and that’s who they play this week. If they win that one they are in.

Based on these projections
Quarterfinals- TM @ North Star and Shade @ Windber, CT @ NB if CT makes it.

The top 4 have seen a lot of each other over the last 5 years!

Also remember that Southern Huntingdon is AA, too. NBC and TM have three AA opponents this year.

Coach,

Not sure of how the playoffs work. My question is "Do Seven teams make the playoffs for D5?"
Isnt there a required amount of wins to advance to the postseason?

If you could shed some light on that for me I would appreciate it. This site is where I usually go for updated
information. Also, has anyone heard how the big guy from Windber made out with his knee injury?

He's at the Dr. as we speak. Will know more later tonight. I musunderstood momma. Thought he had the appointment Monday. He's feeling much better though. Told me last night he'd be ready for the Township game but I told to wait to see what the tests show. If the doctor says he should sit, he'll sit.

Keep me posted. I understand how bad these kids want to get back on the field after injury and wish you the best.
The positive side for him is that Windber will be in playoffs so his season will continue regardless if it is a one, two or three
week recovery thing.

I may be wrong, but I believe any team with 4 wins gets in the 5A playoffs.

4 gets you in. The field needs 6 teams so if the 6th team has 3 they are in. That shouldn't happen this year.

Nothing really changed this week with my picks being correct.

Important info from week 5:
For seeding, NB holds a tiebreaker over NS if both have 2 losses now. Same if they both lose 1 when it comes to Windber. Windber still has a few tough games. For me, NB will have to lose a game versus Mt Union, West Branch, or Williamsburg to lose more than 2 games. I'm not saying they will but they are considered the "favorite" in those games. They play Mt Union this week.

CT's heartbreaking loss in OT might keep them out of the playoffs "on paper." They'll need an upset now to get in.

1 and 2 likely earn a bye. If 7 make it 2 doesn't get a bye. Looks more likely that we see 6 now.
