NCAA to restore Penn State football scholarships

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- The NCAA says it will gradually restore football scholarships taken from Penn State over the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal, saying the school has made significant changes to its athletics programs.

College sports' governing body said Tuesday that five scholarships will be restored next year and more will be phased in until the school reaches normal totals in 2016-17.

The NCAA says the decision was made based on the recommendation of former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, who's been serving as Penn State's athletics integrity monitor.

Penn State and the NCAA agreed to the penalties a year ago, shortly after Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse.

Penn State is also paying a $60 million fine and serving a five-year ban on postseason play.

This is good to hear, keep making changes and sanctions will be reduced even more. Although I don't think the fine will change and shouldn't. That money will be going to important programs and organizations. Does anyone know if this will affect just the total number of players on scholarship or does it include being able to offer 5 more scholarships in recruiting? Will they be able to sign 20 players, rather than just 15?

Nevermind, my question was just answered in an article I read.

The only other Sanction I want to see restored will be bowl eligibility. I think that has a very slight chance of happening before this bowl season, but definitely will happen before next.

The rest can be determined by the courts, Paterno's, and NCAA.

I always thought they should have been allowed to play in a bowl game, but the $$ should have been donated to different organizations and programs.

This is huge for Penn State and well deserved. The last 22 months for the alumni, students, fans, and anyone with a Penn State association has been very trying. 90% of the time when I meet someone and tell them I graduated from Penn State, the first thing they talk about is the scandal. We know it happened and feel bad for the victims just as anyone else. I personally think Penn State handled this better than most universities in the country would have in there circumstances. They did this all while through interim presidents, athletic directors, coaches, and BOT into the fire. Penn State funded the Freeh Report accepted its findings and lived with the punishments as a result of the findings. Yes, the public cried foul and were not supporters of Freeh but the university and athletic departments accepted them without a whimper. They accepted unprecedented penalties without a whimper.

If anyone wants a good listen on one National Media's opinion on the Sandusky scandal, this is a good listen and tells it best, imo.
