Westmont beats Johnstown
Westmont beats Johnstown
On one hand, you've got to take your hat off to Coach Barron and the whole Westmont team. They ran the ball 53 times for 330 yards (6.2 YPC) to keep Johnstown's high powered offense off the field all day.
On the other hand, you've got to just throw up in your mouth at the thought of Johnstown, with all that talent, losing a game like this. Some stats I'd like to highlight:
[ul][li]Johnstown had 15 yards rushing[/li]
[li]Westmont had the ball for 33:46, Johnstown had 14:04 of possession[/li]
[li]Johnstown was sacked 4 times for -7, -6, -10, and -12 yards[/li]
[li]Johnstown had 14 penalties for 88 yards, Westmont had 4 penalties for 24 yards[/li]
[li]Westmont ran the ball 53 times, Johnstown ran the ball 12 times[/li]
[li]Johnstown called 32 passing plays, Westmont called 2[/li][/ul]
I've said it before and I'll say it again (and again). This is high school football. If you run the ball, you win. If you stop the run, you win. This isn't a difficult concept.

\The stat I am most surprised at is 2 passing attempts for Westy. I figure they might not have thrown it once.
But I agree. Congrats to Westy.
I don't consider them to be a top team. But the style they play with out question can cause some teams issues. J-town needs to take a hard look. Way to much talent to have 3 losses at this point in the season. They still have to play BG.

Not making excuses and you shouldn't leave the outcome of a game in the referees hands but Johnstown was robbed on two calls a touchdown that was "ruled" a fumble and a two point conversion that was "ruled" out. Put those into account and Johnstown wins the game not to mention the fiasco with the last 56seconds left in the game. I usually do not play the referee card but theses guys were beyond awful. Has anyone ever heard of a clipping call on a defensive player? On a side note if you cant establish a running game your only other option is to pass.

I wouldn't contend Westmont was a top team in the LHAC either because there are only two; Bedford and Bishop Guilfoyle. But you have to probably put them at number four or five with Forest Hills in the conference and that's a vast improvement from where people picked them at the beginning of the season.
The Trib article made a great point. The offense may be boring, but it's getting the job done. They could very well end up 7-3 (losses to the top 3 teams in the LHAC). Coach Barron is doing a great job playing to his team's strength, which could lead to a home playoff game for the first time in forever.

It's hard to not to put Westmont at #4 in the hierarchy right now. They are beating the teams they can, and losing to the teams that are better than them. It's a bizarre style of football that they play, but it's the one that gives them the best chance to win. I watched them against McCort, and they did the same thing to them. McCort scored 3 touchdowns all on big plays. Westmont held the ball for 36 minutes though and won by 6.
Re: Westmont beats Johnstown
Congrats to westmont and coach Barron. This is why I would consider him a coach of the year candidate. Not as much talent as the top teams, but that offense can take over a game. Also not to consider Somerset a top LHAC team is pretty unfair. Their only loss was to a tough Bedford team 28-18.

I don't think anyone said anything negative about Somerset in this thread?
Re: Westmont beats Johnstown
Come on Crimson! Not a top team???? Maybe you agree with that comment. I disagree. Why aren't they a top team? I agree if they would use more than 3 plays and use hemminger and flank Heiple out and pass to him and something other than the same fly pattern to coyle, they would be way better. They have no trick plays either, halfback pass, qb throw back, and don't know how to run a screen pass. Slant -n- go, hook and go, down out n go. They are very basic on offense. Don't know how teams can't stop those couple plays. lol But all in all, they are a top team even with the coaches they have because of some real good athletes.

I think GrapeApe referred to Somerset as the third best team in the league, which is what I would agree with.
Re: Westmont beats Johnstown
We will find out because Somerset and BG do play. He may be right. You never know, that is why they play the game. But they still are a top lhac team. They play a tough schedule too!
