1,000 point scorers

[font=Times New Roman, serif]Is is me or does there seem to be more and more guys and girls scoring 1,000 points in a career now-a-days?  Not to discredit what they've done.  They should be proud of that feat.  But I can remember when you had 3 maybe 4 a year do it in an area.  Now we have 1 or 2 a week.  And most of the time back then they were seniors towards the end of the season.  Now we have juniors.  Just curious if anyone else noticed it?[/font]

Funny was just thinking about this the other day. And my point is not to discredit anybody but back 15-20+ years ago Freshmen were still playing junior high basketball. So now kids are playing 4 years of varsity as compared to 3.

Exactly.  Kids that can get a lot of PT as freshmen, get a headstart towards 1K.  In days gone by, a good kid maybe started as a Jr., and then Sr.  If they got 350-400 pts. as a Jr., and 500-650 as a Sr., they were really high scorers.  Congrats to Ms. Thomas.  I understand her family was originally from Beaverdale.  What if......

It's pretty simple. Kids today are playing 4 years of Varsity Ball. Plus, I would have to say the last true 1000 point scorers were prior to 1987. Remember the 3 point shot took effect in 1988. 4 years plus the 3 pointer if you play four years consistently probably averaging 350-400 points a season that's 1000-1500 points for four years.

I know the 3-pointer can add a decent amount of points on to a total, but I wanted to actually see it. Jake Heiple was an easy example. He's currently at 1124 points according to maxpreps with 105 3's. If you take away the 3-point line, Jake still has 1019 points.

Dylan Barnes currently in Maxpreps with 1267 points and 130 3's. Throw out the 3-point line and he's still at 1137.

Ferndale's Hinton is listed with 1456 points and 70 3's. He'd still be at 1386.

the 3-point line is definitely not throwing off the numbers, it's freshmen points.

Keep in mind most teams play a 22 game regular season schedule now instead of the 24 that were played ten years ago. Also, even though there are more four year players now, those kids also have to stay healthy the whole time too. 1000 points is still a great accomplishment.

However, the biggest reason there is a bump in 1000 point scores is because of the lack of competition. Competition within their own school, especially in Boys' Basketball. In Girls' basketball there have always been a good amount of freshman putting up numbers. It's much easier now for a good freshman to step in and contribute right away because there aren't as many even adequate players above them. So it's easier for them to rack up points as a freshman and sophomore. Then their junior and senior years they can get there easily as long as they stay healthy...
