Why is this written as if ties in the regular season are now a thing again?  (Or did I miss a rule change announced?) 

I believe they still have OT. However, if a game was suspended late, say fourth qtr and it was tied. Would they, at that time, call it a tie ? Only thing I could think of. Chances are slim but they had to put it in. Just to CYA

A game that's unable to be completed would be considered final. If it's tied, then it is final as a tie.

I would assume this is for bizarre weather or other game ending problems (huge sewage fountain coming out like Old Faithful at the 50)

Thanks for the clarification. I always thought that games were only deemed official if they had a winner/loser and if tied it would be deemed "no contest" or suspended and picked up say on a Sunday or Monday if possible.

Just throwing out situations I've personally seen. What would they do if?:
1. One bank of lights went out. I was at a game a few years back in NC where one half of the lights went out (no not at the point lol) and they played on one side of the field. from the -45 in on the non scoreboard side. The other part of the field was pitch black. Would they call the game, or continue another day?
2. Lightning. I've seen games (mostly baseball) delayed. Would they do the same here?
3. Hurricane weather. Again more in NC in early part of the season, but we can get some ripple effects with downpours, and possible unsafe conditions.

just playing devil's advocate and seeing what would be done.

There is still overtime, see my post earlier this month. I saw the same article and had to ask. Apparently Tom Elling is the one confused. Overtime is the same as it has been. There are no ties

I was at a game maybe 20 yrs. ago in Patton, vs. Bedford.  Before the half, one side of the field opposite the scoreboard was blacked out due to transformer problem.  After extended halftime delay, both teams agreed to play on.  Bedford was coming out of the dark side.  Threw a hail Mary to Bill Benbow blowing past everyone for the long TD!  Caught on his outstretched hands.  How he saw it coming out of the dark, IDK.  Impressive as heck.

Sorry, went back and found your post (was on vacation).  Glad I wasn't the only one baffled by all that!

NHFS standard is if the game isn't played at all, it's a no-contest. Regardless the reason. If it's played and not concluded, the score at the time of suspension is the final if it cannot be continued (or teams elect not to continue it). If it's tied, it's tied.

Teams try not to let a close game result in a tie or loss (as the losing team is much more amiable to continuing) but sometimes circumstances just don't allow the scheduling. Two teams from 60+ miles apart playing and it's 20-20 with 5 minutes to go in the fourth and a horrible lightning storm rolls in and postpones the game for hours and there's no signs of it letting up to finish the game? They're not driving back the next day for 5 minutes of football. And they're not getting hotel rooms, either. It's just going to be a tie.

Happened in Ohio just last year or the year before. Not really the outcome anyone wants, but it happens. Many games get called early for weather, and it's usually a one-sided game that no one cares that it was called early. I was at a 53-7 blowout in the early 3rd quarter that was called due to lightning and the teams opted to just call it a day. No sense waiting out a storm to run some garbage time running-clock plays.

But, if it were 7-7, it's much harder for teams to be okay calling it a night. A few years ago in Ohio, I remember a game was called in the first quarter. It was only a two-touchdown game, but neither team wanted to try and wait out the storm and were about 2 hours apart travel time. They weren't coming back on Saturday (or Sunday or Monday) to complete it. It's basically up to the visitor. The home team just hosts it. But, some cases the home stadium may become unplayable and either another venue is needed to finish the game or the visitor becomes the host to complete the game.

It's pretty difficult to just say 'there's no ties' when a 7-6 game after 5 minutes can result in a win and a loss, yet a 7-7 game after 5 minutes is considered 'unplayed'... It's a tie. Simple. Though unfortunate.
