Mountain League Week 10
Posted: October 31st, 2017, 7:00 pm
Last Week 6-1 (32-8 season)
With the regular season wrapped up, 6 of the 8 league teams head into the playoffs looking to survive and advance. Meanwhile Penns Valley & Philipsburg start prepping for hoops season. Huntingdon earned the right to sit back and relax this weekend while the other 5 teams are in action. 4 of the 5 square off in rematches from the regular season.
Friday 11/3
D5/6-AAA First Round
Tyrone (3-7) @ Central (7-3)...The Golden Eagles head to Roaring Spring this week for a league rematch from week 2 in which the Dragons prevailed 31-14. Central will see a different team than what they saw in the previous matchup as Denver Light has since been replaced under center by leading receiver Parker Mitchell. Light was 12-21 for 136 yards in the first game but was sacked 7 times and got zero help from the running game (33 carries, 37 yards). Tyrone will have to do a better job protecting Mitchell and must establish some sort of a running game to have a chance this week. Trystan Detwiler led the Dragons with 109 yards/2 TDs on just 14 carries and junior QB Noah Muthler went 5-7 for 194 yards and a 72 yard TD to TE Austin Garner. Detwiler has since totaled 1205 yards rushing and averaging almost 10 ypc. I look for Detwiler and the Dragons defensive front seven to continue to be too much for Tyrone to handle with the 2nd matchup having a similar result as the 1st. Central 35 Tyrone 13
D5/6/9-AAAA Semifinals
Clearfield (6-4) @ Bellefonte (8-2)...In the other league rematch the Clearfield Bison look to get revenge for a 55-28 loss at Bellefonte in week 4. In that game Red Raiders QB Dylan Deitrich ran for 204 yards and 6 TDs! Meanwhile Bison QB Isaac Rumery threw for 356 yards and 3 TDs along with 3 INTs. Deitrich, who wasn't even the teams starting QB at the start of the season, has since gone over 1000 passing, 1200 rushing and has accounted for 28 TDs. The Clearfield junior QB's numbers are very impressive in their own right. Rumery has thrown for over 2400 yards with a completion % of 64% and 31TDs along with 7 TDs on the ground. I think this round will be closer than the 1st but still believe Clearfield just doesn't have enough on the defensive side to slow down the Red Raiders. Scoreboard should get a workout once again. Bellefonte 42 Clearfield 28
Saturday 11/4
D5/6-AAA First Round
Bald Eagle Area (4-5) @ Juniata (7-3)...BEA was probably the most surprising member of the 6 team playoff field with their sophomore heavy lineup but with an impressive road win at Clearfield and a narrow 8 point loss at Tyrone the Eagles have shown they can compete with some of the playoff regulars. The Eagles leading passer, rusher and receiver are all sophomores and LB Kael Gardner who leads the team with 118 tackles is a junior. Juniata, who's always the wildcard in D6, also leans on some younger guys. QB Jeremiah Parsons and RB Bryson Clark are both juniors and lead an offense that averages 291 ypg and 29 ppg. The defense is the Indians strength giving up 11.6 ppg. Senior LB Ben Lauver leads the D6-AAA field with 10 sacks and Juniata as a team has recorded 35. The Indians are looking to make a 3rd straight appearance at Mansion Park but the road would get tougher next week with a rematch vs a Huntingdon team that beat them 38-20 earlier this year. Look for BEA to be a big player in this field over the next couple years but this year I think is just one year too soon. Juniata's experience will prevail. Juniata 30 BEA 14
