Summer Runs

There are several fun runs and races throughout the area. I won't be around to be in these races, as I'll be leaving for Cincinnati about June 7, and there's a Daniel Boone half marathon out there on June 11. The course description says that it's not quite as hilly as Pike's Peak.... lol
A few good runs in the area include two over in Somerset County. Rockwood has a 5k and half marathon race that I am particularly fond of. I've ran the half the past two years, and the course is very flat. It's an up and down course on the train trails near Rockwood, and you don't even notice the very very very very slight up and down hill. Even though it's 13.1 miles, so I don't recommend wearing short distance racing flats. I had to do that last year, as my other shoes sucked, and I got a nice blister from it. It's also good for a 5k, as the flat course rule still applies. They also have pizza, watermelon, bananas, and all kinds of other food and drinks waiting at the finish line, though the pizza's usually nearly gone once I'm back from the half. Also, there is a total of 7 water stops along the way of the half marathon, if you count them again coming back. 3 on the way up and then the turnaround is a water station too. The 5k has one at the turnaround. So all in all, this is a very well organized and run race. Try it. This is usually about the second or third Friday of June, and I would guess that it's the third Friday for this year as well (like last). It's 15 dollars for race day entry, including t shirt.
Also, the John Whaley 5 Mile Memorial Run in Windber is nice as well, and it goes uphill to go below Windber Medical Center about mile 4 of the run. Then it's pretty much downhill to the finish. Other than that, it's not a real bad course, and this is also well run and organized. A whole gym full of treats. Can you imagine? This is the first week of July, and I think my form said July 3 for this year. I think this race is also 15 dollars for race day entry, with t shirt.
