Scholastic Notebook:

Sean Lee was one of the best all-around football players in the WPIAL. At Upper St. Clair, he was a standout at running back, defensive back and returning kicks. The seasons have changed, but Lee is still showing why he’s Mr. Versatility.

Lee is a senior on the Upper St. Clair basketball team. Don’t ask what position he plays. Ask what position he doesn’t play.

Lee (6 feet 3, 215 pounds) has been on Upper St. Clair’s varsity basketball team since his freshman year, a starter since his sophomore year. He has always been a guard and mostly a point guard. Last season, he was an all-W.P.I.A.L. Class (AAAA) selection.

But this season, Lee is the man for all positions.
“In our two scrimmages, he’s played point guard, small forward and center – and in the same quarter,” said Upper St. Clair basketball coach Danny Holzer. “Depending on our lineups and situations, he could be the point guard one possession and center the next.”

High school basketball in Pennsylvania begins Friday night (Dec. 3). The past two weeks, Upper St. Clair has scrimmaged Plum and Shaler. Lee has been the team’s leading scorer and rebounder in the scrimmages. He was second in assists.

Holzer said Lee has no qualms about playing on the inside.
“He’s such a team leader that he just says, ‘Wherever you need me is where I’ll play,’” Holzer said.

Holzer has his reasons for playing Lee on the inside.
“Just because he’s gotten so big and strong and also because of the way he plays,” Holzer said. “He’s always been very, very crafty and strong.”

With Lee, Upper St. Clair is expected to be one of the top teams in W.P.I.A.L. Class (AAAA) this season. But Lee’s future is definitely football. Lee will miss Upper St. Clair’s basketball game Saturday (Dec. 4) because he will be on an official visit to West Virginia. He will go to Iowa the weekend of Dec. 11-12.

However, Lee’s top school is still Penn State. He said a few weeks ago that he might commit to the Nittany Lions, but has decided to take a few visits instead. Still, Penn State is the leader.

Simon Gratz in Pittsburgh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simon Gratz High School is a perennial power in the Philadelphia Public League. This weekend, Pittsburgh fans can see how good Gratz is.

Gratz will play in the Schenley Tournament, which is being played at Peabody High School. On Friday night, Gratz will play Pittsburgh Central Catholic at 8:30. In the other game, Girard College will play Schenley at 5:30. The two winners will play tomorrow night.

Gratz has won six Philadelphia Public League championships since 1990 and also produced a number of Division I college players. Gratz’s most famous alumnus is Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit Pistons. Wallace was an all-Philadelphia selection three years in a row (1991-93).

Another Gratz graduate is Aaron McKie of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Tournament Time

The first weekend of the high school season always is filled with tipoff tournaments. Another one of the top games in a tournament is Friday night when Aliquippa plays Oliver, 6 p.m. in the North Hills Tournament. Some publications are picking Oliver as the No.# 1 team in the City League. Some are picking Aliquippa No.# 1 in WPIAL Class (A).

The best girls’ tournament this weekend is definitely the Oakland Catholic Tournament, which includes four perennial Pennsylvania powers. On Friday night, Oakland Catholic plays Villa Maria at 6 p.m. and Allentown Central Catholic plays Archbishop Carroll of Radnor at 7:30. Allentown Central Catholic has won four PIAA Class AAA championships in a row.

Oakland Catholic will be without its coach for the Villa Maria game. Rich Irr was ejected from the Eagles’ final game last season. Under P.I.A.A. rules, an ejected coach or player is not eligible for the next game, even if it’s the next season.

Irr is not even allowed in the building to watch his team’s game.

No Word on Pope !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Herb Pope is a talented 6-foot-8 sophomore at Aliquippa. He grew up in Beaver County, played at a school in Washington D.C. as a freshman and then moved back to the area. First, he enrolled at Hopewell, but recently transferred to Aliquippa.

But Pope won’t be playing for the Quips yet. The W.P.I.A.L. wants to have a hearing with Pope first to determine if he transferred for athletic intent. The hearing will most likely be some time next week.

Some scouting services rank Pope among the top 30 sophomores in the country. He has a cousin on Aliquippa’s team. Tommie Campbell is a senior forward for the Quips.

Where Are They Now

Former Blackhawk High School star Ryan Evanochko is a starting guard for Wisconsin-Green Bay, an NCAA Division I college. Evanochko, a 6-foot-2 junior, is playing 38 minutes a game for the Phoenix (3-1). He is averaging 9.8 points. 5.5 rebounds and is tied for second on the team in assists.
