A 16-team boys high school summer basketball league is in the works. From what I understand, the league will be run in such a way as to allow coaches to use their timeouts as they would in a scrimmage game. The coaches would have the opportunity to call timeout, come out on the floor, and teach at certain times of the game. It will be interesting to watch the teams in such an unusual summer league environment.

Games will be played at Windber High School, Elementary, Community Building, and the auxilarry gym.

Here is a list of teams that I know are participating for sure....
Bishop McCort
Westmont
Windber
Portage
North Star
Conemaugh Twp.
Conemaugh Valley
Ligonier Valley
Everett
Forest Hills
Richland

The league was designed for the coaches to be able to teach and not worry about wins and losses. No standings are kept and there are no playoffs.

Some things I have seen in the league so far from the teams and players that I have watched.

Berkey, a senior from Shanksville is a very good player. I could see him having a solid career at a D3 school like Juniata.

Spaid, a senior from Portage is a very good talent, he just needs to play with more energy and intensity. He needs an mid-range game as well. He either shoots threes or layups.

Balog a junior from Westmont has played well every time I have seen him.

Johnstown hasn't had all of its big guns at the games, but is still doing well.

Shanksville is going to be solid again especially with Berkey and Coach Long at the helm.

Westmont has won every game I have seen by large totals.

McCort has looked good when their horses are there.

Windber is a very aggressive, scrappy team. If they can get some scoring, they are going to be very solid. Charney has done a wonderful job with them.
