Pittsburgh Post-Gazette May 18th. Title: Change Coming at IUP? IUP is one of 30 schools the NCAA has asked to explain the usage of Native American imagery in it's sports programs. IUP uses Indians as it's nickname. Native American nicknames, mascots and logos are found by many to be demeaning. The NCAA will decide this summer if it can ban schools from using Native American imagery. The NCAA could PENALIZE schools which refuse to change in the same manner it penalizes states that recognize the Confederate flag. Florida State (Seminoles) and Utah (Utes) are two of the more high-profile schools on the list. Other nicknames under review are Braves, Redmen, Savages, and Warriors. The NCAA's Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee will study the issue next month.

I'll tell you what's demeaning: The Fighting Irish. Don't the Irish have the reputation for drinking and fighting and barroom brawls and stuff like that. "Fighting" rekindles that reputation. I think the Fighting part should be dropped, with something more mellow to take it's place. How about the Sassy Irish? Shows spirit, just not too harsh.

How about if they become the "Green Machine"? Or would THAT offend all of America's farmers who own JOHN DEERE'S?

I don't understand why even something as little as a name would offend minorites, or even make them think the names are demeaning. If a school were to name their team the Whities, or the Honkies, I wouldn't be offended.

Yeah, now that you mention it, as a Catholic, I'm offended (hiccup) by that "fighting" (hiccup) part. Gives all us (hiccup) Catholics the reputation that we're drinkers (hiccup) and fighters.

Now where's my beer (hiccup)?

How about "gophers" ? That offends guys on cruise ships like the Love Boat who go for this and go for that. And the Green Wave offends inexperienced women who served in the Navy during WWII.
