ENOUGH...geez...i already have a list of you guys out there that don't like hockey...i get it! Holy Crap... and you wonder why people can't get along? it's because people with different views can't keep thier mouths shut when they should...Titan..you don't like hockey and you don't like penn state we all get it..back off.


So anyone who actually likes hockey...what do you think about the new deal? I think it's gonna be interesting to see all the players moving to different teams and finally seeing smaller teams be able to get back into the swing of things.

Well, hockey has a tough row to hoe to get anywhere near the level of popularity that football, basketball, and baseball enjoy. They were already at the bottom of the barrel, but this lockout has plunged them down even further. So I doubt that too many people are going to be tuning into hockey this coming fall when it does come back on. The only ones that will really be doing so (unless nothing's on) would be the die hard fans.

As far as the deal goes, I think the salary cap level is a bit low, but the players union rejected better deals back in February. They were warned by some that if this festered for a year, the deals that would get done then wouldn't be as favorable to the players as the deals offered back in February. But that's a whole nother thing.

The salary cap itself is probably a good thing, and will boost the competitiveness of the sport. I mean, look at the NFL and how the salary cap has maintained a competitive nature. Admittedly, there are some teams that are always good. But the year before New England won the Super Bowl, they finished with a record of 5-11. Pittsburgh was 6-10 last year before going to 15-1. The Carolina Panthers, over a span of three years, went 1-15, to 7-9 the next year, to 11-5 and a Super Bowl appearance the year after that. So the salary cap gives bad teams the chance to land a few decent players, redo a few things, and possibly make a run for the playoffs within a year or two. Whereas with the MLB, the teams usually in the playoffs are the usual suspects with higher salary teams. The Yankees and Red Sox have the two highest salaries in baseball, and they seem to have been regulars in the ALCS the past few years. The Cardinals always do well, and the Pirates and Reds always stink. Perhaps a salary cap would change that, but for now, it is what it is.

So what effect will this have on hockey? Well, some of the players may not be payed what their agent (or other teams), think they are worth, but no team would be able to afford them at that price. However, some of the worse teams in the leaque, (such as the Penguins) will have a chance to improve by collecting salary cap castoffs and gelling them together into a solid unit (think New England Patriots). This will enhance the sport, and even though it may have shot itself in the foot by having the lockout as long as it did, perhaps this is taking a step in the right direction towards winning fans back and gaining new ones. Maybe when this is all said and done, more fans will be watching hockey in five or ten years than there would have been watching in the pre-lockout days. But for now, hockey is mortally wounded, and many people, for better or worse, don't care that the sport finally got a deal done.

I agree with you count. It gives teams, such as Pittsburgh, a fighting chance now. I believe now that all teams have a chance, there will be a few more fans.

the new rule changes are gonna help bring some intrest i think also...it'll be higher scoring faster paced hockey. Some of the new rules are letting the smaller more skilled players back in the league. You'll be seeing a lot more players like Martin St. Louis!
