Paterno's Salary

Post by once a runner »

I know this was discussed in a previous topic, but I couldn't find it....In the news today a court rules that PSU must reveal Paterno's salary, but Penn St. will not reveal it until they exhaust the appeals process. It must be really important to them to keep it hush-hush considering they are spending all this money to keep it secret.

This all makes me wonder why PSU is hiding JoePa's salary...Why wouldn't they want the public to know???? Heck, why wouldn't JokePa himself just reveal it? What's to hide??

I smell a rat.

Maybe the public wouldn't be too crazy about finding out that much of their donations to keep season tickets goes to the Father of Football. There's got to be a reason why they are willing to spend big bucks to defend and appeal a salary that is a matter of public record since PSU is a public university.

Every year, Parade magazine in the Sunday paper has an issue with dozens of pictures and salaries listed for all walks of life, including CEO's and Celebrities. How about each and every one of us on here reveal to the world just how little we are worth? C'mon, now. What's fair is fair, right? I personally don't give a flying fig what JoePa makes. If he or anyone else is making way more than what the PUBLIC perceives is a fair salary, is it his fault? NO! It's the SYSTEM that pays it to him! Anyone bitchin about it is just sour grapes about something else. Let's talk about T.O. He just wants to be able to "feed his family". On 10 MILLION a year for a SEVEN year contract. CONTRACT! As in agreement. That he and his agent negotiated with the team STUPID enough to pay him that figure. Is T.O. wrong? for bitchin, yes. For what he agreed to? Give us all a break. Beam me up, Scotty, there's no intelligent life down here.

If nobody cares, then why are PSU and JokePa so reluctant for everyone to know how much dough The Grand Old Phony of College Football brings home per year?

Its the principle of the thing. If it doesnt come out of the taxpayers pocket, why does it have to be public? The athletics are completeley self sustained, end of story.

Here is an article with JoePa's views on it.

Court ruled school should reveal coach's salary
ESPN.com news services

In 40 years as head coach at Penn State, Joe Paterno's salary has been kept under wraps. But that could be about to change.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Saturday the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania ruled 3-2 that JoePa's salary is a matter of public record. Penn State had argued that, as a privately operated institution, it was not required to reveal employees' salaries.
"We're exploring our appeal options," university spokesman Tysen Kendig told the Inquirer. "We maintain our belief that there's a common-law right to privacy, and that's the case we'd continue to make in any appeal."
According to the Inquirer, the court ruled that employees of Penn State, which received $323 million from the state this year, are like other state workers whose wages are a matter of public record.
"Access to this information allows the public to meaningfully evaluate the wisdom and appropriateness of these state appropriations," judge Bernard L. McGinley wrote in the majority opinion.
Paterno declined to comment on the decision. The Inquirer reported that in the past he has said he would be happy to disclose his salary but would respect the university's policy.
There has been interest in Paterno's salary for years. According to the Inquirer, in 2002 a reporter for the Harrisburg Patriot-News filed a Right To Know Act request in an attempt to discover the salaries of Paterno and other top Penn State officials. The State Employees' Retirement System granted the reporter's request, which Penn State appealed.

Please provide the proof that JoePa's salary is completely paid for by funds brought in by the football program. I 'll believe that when I see it.

Regardless, it is public money paying for Joe's salary, whether it is by tax dollars, or by ticket sales. Either way, the public has a right to know.

Besides, if I was a PSU fan, I would want to know exactly how much JoePa has been overpaid the past 4 seasons.
