Royce Waltman

Post by foghorn »

Did anyone read the excellent article about Royce Waltman in the Mirror yesterday! Many of the younger BCs probably don't know who RW was, but anyone with a little age remembers what a tough son of a gun he was.

back in my college days I went to see a IU game when he was Bobby Knights asst coach. I talked with him after the game for a good 15 min or so bull crapping about his days at Bedford high. Three years later I saw him in action as the Head coach at Depauw University. I chatted with him for a while before the game. He was wearing a impressive suit that day. By end of game he had thrown tie off and his dress shirt was buttoned a quarter of the way down. he was going wild over some calls. Was a good guy to talk to and I know soon he will make some noise in the NCAA tournament

Royce is a good coach. I hope to see him succeed even more at the college level.

Royce may be a good coach...he may even be a great coach...but I don't understand why everyone thinks he was an unbelievable high school coach...He played against county teams...he wasn't playing against teams that are in the LHAC...Also look at the players he had...

Times have changed, but you can't judge someone who coached a long time ago, with todays schedules. Coaches like Royce Waltman and Ed Clark are old school and demanded respect and class from their players. Many of todays players would not understand that level of commitment.

I think that Royce was a great coach and it was a different time...But I think that Steve has harder competition to play against...because he is in the LHAC

Great is great. If Waltman started coaching in the region right now, even at Podunk High, he'd have one of the better programs before long. I'm not saying he was the best coach ever in the area, but few ever had his combination of intensity, dedication, and intelligence.
