"Remembering James Dungy"

I'm in real good mood as you'll all see momentarily.

So I am watching the Insight.com Bowl between the 69th place Big East team Rutgers and thr 15th place Pac-10 team Arizona State. Many things made me want to blow up my television.

#1: ESPN shows a little pop-up window on the screen showing what is up next after the game. One of the things listed was "Remembering James Dungy". Maybe I am in a minority here, and if you get offended you are invited to step up and get hurt because headbutts are free. But do we really need a "remembering James Dungy" special? The kid is a suicide case. He is not a kid that walked across the street and got blasted by a drunk driver. He took his own life. Does this kid really deserve one single bit of attention focused on him? Now, from a sports-channel perspective (Fox sports, ESPN, etc) I can understand talks about how this will affect the Colts Super-Bowl chances and all that. But is there any call for ANY refecting on a kid who killed himself? I have no sympathy for suicides. He doesn't deserve any attention. What did make me laugh though was when Musberger, the biggest idiot on Earth, read what was on the screen and then about 5 seconds later referred to something almost making him want to kill himself. That was VERY classy.

I agree, and I've said that every since they've started showing that crap on ESPN about the entire J.D. situation. We might have to remember him for the simple fact that he took his own life. He was probably a kid that could have done nothing with his life and still been well off. He had nothing to worry about, and unless the front that Tony Dungy is putting up is exactly that, a front, then he could have run home to daddy anytime and he would have taken him in, no problems.

The simple fact is that he killed himself. He's not in heaven, he's burning in hell right now for how he took his own life. It's a shame that it happened to Tony Dungy, but I guess he didn't do enough of his own teachings/preachings to keep his kid alive. Game over.

Ham,
I don't think you can look at the parents and try to place blame here. This is sad and tragic that a young man with the opportunites that James Dungy had before him would take his own life. However, you almost have to assume this young man was sick. Something in his mind was not functioning the way it should be. I do agree with the statements that this should not be being broadcast for others to see. I dont think our copycat society needs to see this as a way to get some attention.

I wish the media left this story alone. Allow the family to grieve in peace.

why would you assume he is in HELL? does the bible say suicide is the unpardonable sin?

theres something like 15 suicides every day in this world...what makes jimmy so special? theres over 1700 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that have died in the middle east for something alot greater than a female...do we get a little pop up on espn about every one of them? how about the hundreds of people killed every year by drunk drivers, rapists, coke addicts, etc... yes its tragic that he took his life but for crying out loud thousands of people die, kill or get killed every day, he deserves about as much attention as a mime

I agree with Ham on this one. What could of been so bad that happened to this kid that he needed to do this. A girl? That's no reason to do such a thing especially when you are someone that has everything they would need.

I do feel sorry for the Dungy family. I don't feel that this should all be made public that's just making it worse for them. I also agree with Gunner that there are so many more deaths. It's not like this kid did any heroic deed that there should be a "Remembering James Dungy". The announcement about it on sportscenter was all that was necessary. Everything else is taking it too far.

From what I've seen, the Dungy's are a Christian family. If James was saved, and committed suicide, he can definitely be in Heaven right now. So he is NOT necessarily burning in Hell as many think. Yes, taking a life is a sin, even taking your own life is a sin. But many people die with unconfessed sins. Let's say you are at the beach and you see a girl in a bikini and start lusting after her. You then have a heart attack and die. Will you go to Hell because you died before you confessed that sin?
