Girard Girls earn notice.....
D-#10 team posts impressive wins, joins Class (A) list
The Patriot-News:
Normally it takes a week or two hanging around as a team to watch before cracking the top "10" in The Patriot-News' girls' basketball state rankings.
But missing a team or two in the first week is fairly common.
What's unusual, though, is overlooking a team, then immediately inserting them in the top "10".
District #10 Girard College, a Class (A) team, qualifies as a blown coverage.
Really, Girard should have been a top-"10" team last week but somehow was overlooked. Hey, it happens.
But with a 23-point win over Pottsville Nativity and solid victories against Saltsburg and St. Pius X, they are no longer missing.
Girard College is only one of three fresh faces among top 10 teams in the state. Did everybody inside the top 10 win? Of course not. But there were enough quality losses, and honestly a lack of what would be considered worthy top 10 teams in the group to watch.
Our Lady of Sacred Heart out of District #7 slides in at No. #10 in Class (AA), replacing District #3 Brandywine Heights. O.L.S.H. was another one of those totally overlooked teams from the first poll.
The only other new addition this go-around is Indiana from District #7 at No. #10 in Class (AAA). Thankfully Indiana was part of the poll last week.
Class (AAAA) stayed exactly the same. Nos. #8 and #9 Butler and Bethel Park each lost. But those setbacks were No. #5 Newcastle and sixth-ranked Mt. Lebanon. And neither game was a blowout, so status quo rules.
There was a change in the top spot in Class (AAA). St. Basil, the defending PIAA runner-up, finally lost a game. The Panthers have played the entire season without all-state senior guard Sam Thompson and were 13-0 before Villa Maria finally handed them a loss.
Pine Grove, No. #5 in Class (AA), won a huge game against North Schuylkill earlier this week by #14. When they met, North Schuylkill was ranked sixth.
There were no other changes among top five teams in Class (AA). Greensburg Central Catholic stays No. #1 after traveling to State College last Saturday and posting a 52-48 road victory. This team has traditionally been a regular season bear and a postseason lamb.
If you're looking for something to do late Saturday afternoon, venture over to Trinity and take in what promises to be a stellar girls' hoop matchup. The host Shamrocks, undefeated and ranked No. #2 in (AA), welcome No. #3 and defending P.I.A.A. runner-up Westmont Hilltop to town. The tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
"THE CHOPS".
