FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS:@ Districts #1 and #3 will expand their football playoffs next year to "16" teams in their top classifications, joining District #7 (W.P.I.A.L.) as the P.I.A.A. districts with the largest playoff fields.

District #1 has used an eight-team format in Class (AAAA) since breaking out of its sub-region with Districts #2 and "4" two years ago. The district still is involved in sub-regions in its three lowest classes, although there could be some change in those formats as well.

District #3 will expand its Class (AAAA) and Class (AAA) football playoff brackets to "16" teams each (from eight) and its Class (AA) and Class (A) brackets to eight (from four). The moves were made possible because the P.I.A.A. added a week of playoffs at for the "2006" and "2007" football seasons.

CURRY'S SUCCESSOR:@ Berwick has closed applications for its football coaching job vacated by George Curry, who has more football coaching victories than any coach in state history.

Berwick athletic director Tim Honeywell said nine applicants — including four college coaches and four high school head coaches — will be interviewed beginning Jan. 23.

Honeywell said the school district hopes to name the new coach by its Feb.13th. board meeting.

Curry resigned from Berwick following a 7-3 season marred by player suspensions. He has since applied for the coaching job at Wyoming Valley West High School near Wilkes-Barre.

Curry, who had a 362-74-3 record in "29" seasons at Berwick, is a graduate of Larksville High School, now part of the Wyoming Valley West district. The school recently opened the position of coach Ed Michaels.
