Trojans power past Red Devils....

By CORY ISENBERG

EBENSBURG —

Johnstown had the inside track Wednesday night at Central Cambria High School in the clash of the two Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference section leaders.

The Trojans dominated the inside as 6-foot-3 Derek Rose and 6-6 Kurt Hoffman combined to score 54 points in Johnstown’s 74-64 victory.

Rose finished with a game-high 32 points and had 10 re-bounds while Hoffman added 22 points and 14 boards as Johnstown outrebounded the Red Devils, 46-27.

“I think the inside (was the difference in the game),” Johnstown coach John Fuschino said. “Derek Rose shot the ball very well. Kurt and Derek work well together. They’ve played a lot of games with each other and know where the other one is on the court.”

There were six lead changes in the first 3 minutes of the game. After a tie at 8, Johnstown took the lead and finished the quarter with an 18-14 lead. The Trojans never trailed again.

Johnstown built on its advantage in the second quarter, with Rose surprising the Red Devils with a pair of 3-pointers as the Trojans outscored Central Cambria 22-10 for a 40-24 halftime lead.

“Whenever they packed down on Kurt in the beginning of the game, Derek was hitting 3-point shots and that really opened up the defense and allowed us to build a lead in the first half which I thought was very important against a young team,” Fuschino said. “I thought we would get them early and put them on their heels a little bit.”

The Red Devils (13-2, 7-2) charged back in the second half, outscoring Johnstown 20-15 in the third to make it 55-44.

In the fourth, Central Cambria narrowed the gap to four points twice, the second time with 5:46 remaining when Mike Gowen’s free throw made it 58-54. But that was as close as the Red Devils could get.

“I thought our speed helped to break the pressure and we got some easy baskets when it got close,” Fuschino said. “I thought that was one of the things that helped us in the second half. Give our kids credit, they didn’t fold and kept their composure.”

Demetrius Young also contributed 10 points and 10 re-bounds for the Trojans, who are 13-1 overall and 10-0 in the conference. Defending District #6-(AAA) champion Johnstown is ranked fourth in this week’s Harrisburg Patriot-News state poll.

Justin Davidson topped the Devils with 13 points while Jon Wirfel and Gowen each added 12, and Zach Seymour had 10.

“We obviously dug too big of a hole,” Devils coach Steve Traino said. “It was a combination of things in the first half. I think we were a little nervous and didn’t rebound well. And, then in the second half, we pressed. We showed some moxie. We made some runs and made it competitive. We had our chances but did not execute in the last 3 minutes.”

Notes: Freshman Paul Weatherly filled in for Johnstown starter Aireon Jefferson, who was not with the team in Ebensburg. ... Both teams play in key LHAC section battles on Friday with Johnstown at Bishop McCort and Central Cambria hosting Forest Hills.
