The Conemaugh Valley boys, still unbeaten in the WestPAC North, solidified their position Wednesday night with a 76-54 victory over visiting Windber.

The Blue Jays (14-2, 6-0) played unselfish ball throughout and pressed their advantage over the Windber, which played without starters Matt Mandel and Derek Crognale.

“We ran into a buzz saw tonight,” Ramblers’ coach Kevin Charney said. “They were a step ahead of us at every turn. Credit to them, they took care of business and we couldn’t get the job done.”

The Ramblers opened the game with a 12-4 run before Jays’ coach Garry Lupek called a timeout.

“The first 8 minutes we had a tendency to play too far off our assignments and we didn’t close gaps and take away their penetration and we weren’t challenging their outside shooting like we teach,” Lupek said. “We had to stop and get our composure and have a little bit of patience with the ball on offense.”

Conemaugh Valley came back out and put back-to-back baskets by Brett Sanderson on the board along with buckets by Vince Turner and Robert Gunby, tying the ball game at 12. Dan Gardner’s jumper at 1:43 put Windber ahead 14-12.

Evan Thompson tied the game for the Jays and Conemaugh Valley ended the quarter with the 18-14 lead and never looked back.

“When we came out we were shooting the ball well and after that it went all downhill for us,” Charney said. “We seemed to catch them off guard at the beginning and then they got into their game plan and got us out of ours.”

The Blue Jays outscored the Ramblers 13-10 for a 31-24 halftime advantage.

Thompson helped his team increase its lead in the third quarter, nailing four 3-pointers as Conemaugh Valley built a 52-34 lead.

“We try to do the same thing, night in and night out,” Thompson said. “We feed off each other. We play team basketball. We want to do everything together and play as a team and hopefully we’ll come up with the win.

“Our defense is moving it back and forth and never staying still. We try to keep motion all the time. It’s pretty difficult. Coach Lupek teaches good fundamentals so we work it every day at practice to get better at it.”

In the fourth, both teams emptied their benches.

Four Blue Jays scored in double figures, led by Turner with 15 points while Sanderson, Thompson and Gunby added 14 apiece. Sanderson also added 10 boards as Conemaugh Valley outrebounded Windber 35-32.

“They are very unselfish,” Lupek said of his team. “Everyone can run well and we don’t stop running.”

Gardner topped Windber with 11 points.
