Legion 2006

Patton is on the verge of not having a legion team for the second time in three years. A major push is under way to remove Jack Stanek from the coaching ranks. The Patton General Manager, Randy Choby, is in charge of finding a coach. Instead of finding someone who will help Patton, he has Jack Stanek as head coach. His decison has effected patton and the surrounding area high school baseball programs. His personality as a coach has turned away dozens of young talented players. Because he is the coach, kids do not want to play for him. Therefore they are looking for another team to play for and Jack will not grant them the release needed. So they end up not playing at all.

I have talked to many friends, community members, and most importantly, the parents. They have all expressed their concern for this situation. About 95% of the people I have spoken to on this matter would rather have a baseball program during the summer for the kids to play and get better than have a coach that no one likes and no team to watch on summer evenings and sunday afternoons. About a dozen or so people have showed interest in taking the coaching job. But nothing can be done until Jack decides to give up the job or Randy puts his foot down.

It's not a hard concept to grasp, if the kids don't want to play for you, give up the job for the good of the community and the players themselves. Last season was full of confrontations between Jack and numerous parents. A few believe that Jack is doing what he is doing just so his kids (John and Jeff) are the last 'great' players from patton.

I would like to hear some of your input on this situation, maybe even some support. It's not like the kids don't have the talent. They defeated St. Michael and made the playoffs last year.

It's sad that an individual can't see he's hurting a program just by his presence, if what you say is true. I won't belittle the man, I don't know him, just what he's done on the field against St M. It's too bad he won't release those kids to play elsewhere, but that's the system you contracted to play under. My suggestion might be find a league maybe Altoona or ? where they don't care about any Legion contract and go ahead and play! Do some more studying to find if this will work for you. Good luck.

Yes, I can see that a person can't see that they are hurting a program just by their presence, but he's been told almost on a daily basis about the problem.

As for the Altoona leagues....is it an age group thing or a league for who ever wants to play?

fan4,

Some nerve you have, commenting on an individual not knowing they are hurting a program. YOU are a major contributor to the problem - and you don't even know it!

Your name says it all... fan. I do not personally know the Coach you are speaking of, but isn't it just too easy to blame a hurting program on the coach? In butting your nose into the coach's program, you do more damage than good. If parents and fans were supposed to run teams, why would any program, from pee-wee to pro, have coaches? You are a fan. You're supposed to support your team and do what you can to benefit the program, not tear apart the coach because your kid sits the bench. When you speak up, parents of other kids (who are not getting any playing time) follow your lead. You are a cancer which, unfortunately is destroying not just your Legion team, but your entire sports scene at Cambria Heights. There is certainly potential there, but parents like you are deterring quality coaches from submitting applications for coaching positions.

Congratulations. In placing all of the blame on your coaches, you are now tearing down the few opportunities your kids have to be... well, kids.

Jack Stanek has stepped down as head coach of the legion team this year. Kids on this years ch varsity team have changed their minds about playing this summer. 7 kids from CH, 4 from glendale and even two college freshman are returning after a year off in scott lane and ron jarvie are signed up for the summer. Brett Vescovi's older brother aaron is also playing this year. he's a hard thrower converted to third base his senior year at CH. He still crow hops to throw out kids at first.

First of all, if you really want to play baseball there are other leagues out there. So if you are using a coach as an excuse not to play baseball...well then that's all it is...an excuse.

Confrontations of what? Playing time? Coaching moves? Or just because the team is losing? Any coach who does it for a number of years is going to go through some low points. That's part of the game. When you call for someone's resignation, or trash someone's name on here, you should give a little more information besides "confrontations".

This is where you totally lost all credibility...at least from me. This is about as opinionated as it gets. Now, you are trying to tell me that a dad is going to make sure that his sons are remembered forever by making the team suck for as long as he can? Come on! Now remember, this is VOLUNTEER coaching here. I'm sure this guy as more important things to do then try and make Patton Legion lose. I mean the Staneks have been out of school at least 3 years...the oldest boy a lot longer than that. Again...if this is your basis for calling someone out...BRUTAL!

So let me get this right. It's all the coaches fault if they lose, but he gets not credit when they make the playoffs or win? That makes sense. This, as mentioned earlier by another poster sounds like a classic example of people blaming a coach for a few sub par seasons. I personally wouldn't care, but seeing CH play the last few years, and being you are picking on a volunteer Legion Coach...I take exception. There are some other reasons by Patton hasn't been winning the last couple years besides coaching.

I guess we'll see if this coaching change equals a Legion Championship.

the confrontations were mostly of jack being, jack. one example is when patton was losing to JV/Jtown by almost 15, if i remember correctly. the shortstop and second baseman were joking around with the runner on second, darnelle jones. now darnelle is a funny guy and easy to get along with. by the way jack was acting, he didn't like the kids trying to make the best out of getting the crap kicked out of themselves. so jack took the two players out right in the middle of the inning and embarrassed them by yelling at them until they were both in the dugout

That sounds like being a good coach to me.

If losing is funny, maybe you should try AYSO Soccer.
