W.P.I.A.L. Football Coaches: Two Out, One In
1/18/2007 -

While one W.P.I.A.L. football head coaching vacancy has been filled this week, two other jobs have opened up. Deer Lakes has a new coach while the search begins at both Elizabeth Forward and Waynesburg.

* Deer Lakes has hired Todd Hazlett as the Lancers new football coach as he takes over for Denny Fedigan. Hazlett is a "1991" graduate of Deer Lakes High School and has been a Lancers assistant coach under Fedigan the past four years.

The Lancers have endured "11" consecutive losing seasons and have never qualified for the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs since coming on the scene in "1969". The school's first football coach was Jim Collins, now the W.P.I.A.L.'s administrative assistant.

Deer Lakes will again be part of the Class (AA) Allegheny Conference in "2007". Hazlet will make his coaching debut on August 31st when the Lancers visit Kittanning.

* Pete Rostosky has resigned as head football coach at Elizabeth Forward High School. The former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman coached the Warriors for three years.

EF finished 4-5 under Rostosky in "2004" and missed the playoffs, but then went 4-5 again in "2005", this time qualifying for the postseason where they lost 35-6 to West Allegheny in a Class (AAA) First Round game.

The Warriors were a disappointing 1-8 this past fall, ending the season with eight consecutive losses.

* Waynesburg High School has decided not to rehire head football coach Dave Sarra. Sarra guided the Raiders for the past seven years.

Since taking over from Russ Moore in "2000", Sarra guided Waynesburg to an overall record of 45-26 and four trips to the playoffs in seven years. However despite a 6-4 record in "2006", the Raiders have not made the playoffs since "2003".

In his first year at Waynesburg, Sarra led the Raiders into the "2000" W.P.I.A.L. Class (AA) championship game at Three Rivers Stadium with a perfect 12-0 record. The Raiders fell to Josh Lay and the Aliquippa Quips 14-6 in that title contest.
