Papa Joe does it again!!!!

This year's recruiting class has added one more amazing recruit. To go along with the 9 linebackers we picked up, Joe "Say It Ain't So" Suhey, Igo Potty, and Ryan "Adam Vinatieri Jr" Breen, we now have 2* "athlete" Drew Astorino. "Flew under the radar" that's what they say when a kid isn't very good and still gets a scholarship to a big school. There will be a lot of sad faces this morning, when all the Eastern Illinois and Robert Morris fans find out that Penn State stole Astorino from their clutches. Does anyone else want to play for Penn State? Just call them and they'll mail you the scholarship. We don't want Hynoski, we want Astorino instead.
"Drew Astorino wanted to attend Penn State. But as the 2006-07 recruiting season was winding down, the Edinboro, Pa., native had yet to receive an offer from his home-state Nittany Lions. Earlier this week, that tender came, and the 5-foot-11, 185-pound defensive back wasted no time snapping it up."
Why pick up a bruiser fullback who makes it publicly known he wants to attend your school, when you can just grab wankers at random that Robert Morris is chasing?

He also had an offer from Iowa... I always prefer a guy who the gurus rate the highest, but I wait to see how guys pan out. Give me all 2* and 3* guys and I'll puke. A 4 or 5 star guy pans out much more often than others, but let's take a look at some things.
PSU Football-
2002
JR Zwierzynski 4*
Chris Wilson 4*
Jim Kanuch 4*
Josh Hannum 4*
Mark Farris 4*
Brian Borgoyn 4*
What did any of those guys ever do?
2* guys Steve Roach and Kapinos were more successful than any of them
2003
4* guys Joel Holler, Dan Mazan, Austin Scott,
3* guys Poz, Hunt, Kinlaw
04 and on is too hard to tell yet. 04 though brought us Greg Harrison and his 4 stars as well as Rich Ohrnberger and his 2*. One has been a starter on the OL and the other never did a thing.
How about RB recruits Tim Shaw and Donnie Johnson.. they each were 3* or less. Did they do anything? Scirotto and his 2-3 starts?
Sometimes I wish those stars didn't mean so much to people. I like to look at them and I will always hope for the guy with more stars as I take the word of "experts" but they aren't the tell all.
WVU- Jason Gwaltney 5* and a guy everyone wanted
Steve Slaton 3* and a guy Maryland took their offer from
Another RB...Raymond Williams and his 4*... who is he?
Which back do you take?
Pat White 3*
Eric Wicks 2*
Dykes 2*
Dan Mozes 2* (STUD, STUD, STUD lineman for the Eers)
Pitt- Revis was a 3* guy...now he is an amazing corner
Kinder was a 2* guy and he did more than many guys ahead of him in his class.
HB Blades was a 3*
Greg Lee was a 2* (one of the lowest in his class)
Getsy 2* and Palko 4* (toss up on who I think is better)
Princell Brockenborough was a 4* guy right beside Larry Fitz and his 4*''s, how did these guys pan out.
Enough time wasted for me... I wish he had more *, but he didn't. Maybe we'll get Green and his stars, but maybe Royster will end up as a better back. You never know...you hope and want the best guys...the can't miss guys, but ...well see above.

Excellent points, Coach. As for Iowa offering Astorino, Iowa will take anybody right now. The wheels are complete off out there, and I think they just lost their ace LB recruit to Notre Dame. This is why the rumors of Kirk Ferentz as the Paterno successor scare me: this guy is losing it bigtime in Iowa.
For those 2002 and 2003 kids you listed, except for the obvious, I don't think I've ever even heard those names in my life. Kanuch got kicked off the team. That's as much as I know about those kids. Penn State definitely finds kids who go unnoticed, and as for every kid that doesn't get developed, they do turn some 2* or 3* players into credible talent. You have to remember that I say alot of things on here for comedic value.

Personally, I think the kid made a mistake. He had already verballed to Kent State before getting swayed to PSU at the last minute. His chance of playing at the collegiate level would have been better at Kent State.

Well... he DOES have decent size and speed, but it's hard to argue with what Moldy just said. I guess it comes down to "do you want to be the man at Vo-Tech or sit the bench at Mt. Carmel"?

or.... Is this guy a little bit under the radar because of playing where he plays?
Check out an NFL roster and see how many guys come from colleges that aren't the bigtime schools... You can have 1 star or 5 stars, but it all comes down to how you adapt to college and how hard you work. Some 5 star guys have had it so easy for years that they don't understand hard work and fail. Some guys who have to work for what they have end up reaching a new level of potential when they get in the college system. To end this post though.... I'd still rather have the 5* guys any day. If a 5* guy works hard and develops, he has a much better chance of being great.

Kanuch didn't get kicked off...he was granted early leave from his scholarship because he graduated early.

You might be right, but I definitely heard he got kicked off the team. Who knows. And more importantly, who cares.

Kanuch CHOSE NOT to play his 5th year at PSU. He was actually on scholarship for 4 years and then opted to not avail himself of a 5th year of eligibility. Ended his football career AFTER 4 years.
