West Middlesex coach leaves for Ohio school
2/8/2007,
The Associated Press:

(AP) — Brian Hoffman, last season's Class (A) football coach of the year, is leaving West Middlesex for the job at alma mater Hubbard (Ohio) High.

Hoffman graduated from Hubbard in "1989". Last season, he coached West Middlesex to a 15-1 record and the P.I.A.A. Class (A) runner-up spot.

"There was no other job, in all honesty, that I'd even consider other than the job at Hubbard," Hoffman said. "I've struggled with this the last four weeks. I spent "10" years at West Middlesex and have a lot of great memories, a lot of great kids."

West Middlesex went 15-0 before losing 56-14 to Southern Columbia, which won its fifth straight Class (A) championship.

PA. TO MADISON SQUARE:@ Two Pennsylvania high school runners performed well in the 100th Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden last week.

Jason Weller, a Boyertown senior and the reigning P.I.A.A. Class (AAA) cross country champion, won the high school boys mile in 4 minutes, 15.81 seconds.

"It was definitely the biggest crowd for me ever indoors, really noisy, pretty neat," Weller said. "And it does help to have all these people yelling and cheering."

Easton junior Chanelle Price placed third in the high school girls mile in 4:53.99. Price, who last year won the Nike outdoor national championship in the 800-meter run, moved up to the mile for the indoor season.

"This is my first year really doing the mile," Price said. "I like the way I ran the race. I'm still trying to figure out how to run this distance."

NEW LEADER:@ Upper Perkiomen senior Zack Kemmerer has become Pennsylvania's leader in career high school wrestling victories.

Kemmerer, last year's P.I.A.A. Class (AAA) champion at 135 pounds, won four matches last week to raise his career total to 182 victories.

He passed Connellsville's Ashtin Primus and Mount Pleasant's Donnie Ament, both of whom ended their scholastic careers last year with 179 victories.

There is a possibility Kemmerer (36-5) could be the first state wrestler to win 200 matches.

His Upper Perkiomen team will have at least two matches in P.I.A.A. Class (AAA) dual meet championships this weekend in Hershey. Upper Perkiomen could wrestle up to five matches this weekend, and Kemmerer could wrestle up to 16 matches in the individual postseason tournaments. Last year's state team champions, Upper Perkiomen (19-4) and District #10's Reynolds (16-0), have a chance to repeat their titles.
