Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.

After 8 seconds the penny will have fallen 1296 ft. (approximate height of empire state building 1250-1300 feet) and will be going at a rate of 288 ft/sec
288 ft /sec. x 60 sec/ min= 17,280 ft / min
17,280 ft/min x60 min /hr = 1,036,800 ft / hr
1,036,800 ft /hr divided by 5280 ft / mi = 196.36 mi /hr
I didn't check any of your math except for your original speed in ft/sec. That isn't correct. The gravitational constant is 9.8 meters per second. There are 39.37 inches in a meter(39.37x2.54=99.99). Therefore converting the gravitational constant to inches would involve 9.8x39.37 which equals 385.826 in./s. Converting that to feet which is 385.826/12=32.15 ft/sec......not 36.
