40 Years?

Just watched the Ten Commandments. Must say, I've forgotten how great of a story Moses' really is. Whether or not God did all that stuff is besides the point; this guy's life is a great one and a great tale. Great general, great leader, great prophet. Not so much a great navigator, however. 40 years in the desert. I am a little inclined to think that all his accomplishments are maybe a little in question when you WANDER IN THE DESERT FOR 40 YEARS. I mean... how long until YOU lost patience? It wouldn't matter how much faith you had, or how great you thought Moses was. We are talking 40 years, people. I can just see this: Moses comes into town and is like "Okay, get your stuff, we're getting out of here. No more oppression. Pack up the goat and dirty kids and follow me." Alright man, you got it. I mean, here's a guy who has done great things, comes in and tells you to follow him. Why wouldn't you? So you start wandering and a-wandering and a-wandering. How long would you hold out? About 4 hours into the trek, I can guarantee you I'd be catching up to Moses and saying this: "Hey, man. It's real, real hot outside. We been walking like... 4 hours straight. That place over there looks okay. Let's go hang out over there and then figure out which way is best." Okay so then a few days go by. "Hey, Moses. I'm not second-guessing you, but I would like to be kept updated, ya know? Who told you where there was a good place to stop? I'm just curious. You don't think God is gonna have us walking around in circles, do you? Hey, look, this is your quest, man, I'm just along for the ride. I just ask that we maybe make a map of some landmarks or at least a mental note so that we don't walk in circles. I'll be in the back killing this goat and drinking its blood for nourishment, in case you need me."

40 years!!!! Hundreds of explorers were just as ignorant of the land and resources as Moses and they did just fine. They sure as hell didn't walk around for 40 years. Somebody get this dude a Tom-Tom.

Just incase you didnt know...the number "40" stands for a long period of time in the Bible...ex: Noah and the Arc- Rained for 40 days and nights...Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and nights....and Moses was in the desert for 40 years...

It IS amazing though that a certain number keeps popping up in BOOKS written by different authors and different time periods. For example, the story of the "raining for 40 days and nights" was written at a different time and by a different author, than Jesus being 40 days in the desert. In fact one is in the Old Testament, LONG before Jesus was here on the earth. Amazing how things in the Bible inter-relate. Thanks, count2infinity, for bringing this up. Makes the Bible even look more amazing.

yeah...it's not possible that the number 40 could have had a significance to those people like 13 does for us in it being unlucky... The 7 Dwarfs was written before 7 Brides for 7 Brothers... i think there's something to this... and then there's that variation for Lucky Number Sleven... whoa, this is crazy... it must be truth.

Ah but every example you just gave IS NOT in one book, written over a long period of time by different authors. Coincidence?

Back to the original topic. I guess that since TAE believes that Moses wandered for 40 years in the desert, he also believes in 1) the parting of the Red Sea, 2) the Golden Calf, 3) Moses drawing water from a rock, 4) The Burning Bush, 5) the plagues of Egypt, 6) the Passover 7) manna from Heaven. After all, how can you believe in SOME parts of the Bible and not the rest of it. And if you believe in only some parts, who tells you which are true and which are stories?

hold up there moldy... who decided to put the books of the bible together? it certainly wasn't the authors as you so vividly pointed out they lived hundreds of years apart... who did the initial picking and choosing? and how can we believe they were right? "THEY WERE INSPIRED BY GOD" does not work as an appropriate response...

What's your question have to do with the number 40?
