No Sweep for W.P.I.A.L. as Serra is Rolled by Steelton-Highspire...
12/16/2007 -
The District #7 brooms were put away quickly. Hopes of a first-ever W.P.I.A.L. sweep in the P.I.A.A. football finals ended quickly as Serra Catholic got steamrolled by Steelton-Highspire in the state Class (A) championship game 34-15 Friday afternoon at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey.

The win gives the District #3 champions Steamrollers their (first ever) P.I.A.A. football crown and marks the sixth straight year a team from the 'East' captured the Class (A) title. Southern Columbia won the P.I.A.A. Class (A) Championship the previous (five) years.

All week long, Rich Bowen's Serra Catholic Eagles heard about Steelton-Highspire junior running back Jeremiah Young. Coming into the game, Young had rushed for 3,052 yard this season, including 1,263 yards in five postseason games.

But it was Rollers quarterback Andre Campbell who got the bal rolling for Steelton-Highspire with a 25-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.

Young added to the lead with the first of his four touchdown runs, a 2-yard plunge that put the Steamrollers up 14-0 after the first quarter. Young scored again on a 52-yard run on Steelton-Highspire's first possesion of the second quarter to make it 20-0.

The Serra offense finally came to life midway through the second quarter when quarterback T.J. Heatherington scored on a 30-yard run to cut the Eagles deficit to 20-7 at the half.

Serra's defense came up big twice in the third quarter, but on Steelton-Highspires third possesion, a big play on third down may have sealed the deal. On third and long, Campbel completed his only pass of the day, a 48-yard strike to Kevin Porter, who's acrobatic catch gave the Rollers the ball at the Eagles 9, where Young socred on the very next play to make it 28-7 after the two-point conversion.

The two teams traded scores in the fourth quarter, a 9-yard run by Young for S-H and a 10-yard juant by Chris Loving for Serra Catholic.

Jeremiah Young was the show for Steelton-Highspire as he set a new PIAA Class A championship game rushing record with 292 yards on 45 carries.

Meanwhile the three-headed offensive monster for Serra Catholic was kept in check by the Steamrollers defense. Isaiah Jackson rushed for 67 yards on 13 carries while Chris Loving had 54 yards on 9 carries and Heatherington settled for only 17 yards on 12 carries. The Eagles junior quarterback did not enjoy much succes through the air, completing only 2 of 10 passes for 24 yards.

Serra Catholic's magical season ends with a W.P.I.A.L. title and a final record of 15-1.

Serra Catholic : 0 - 7 - 0 - 8 = 15
