And I agree....as a teacher and a coach, I agree that academics comes first...but your writing seems to indicate that a good coach can't be a good teacher, especially a chemistry teacher.....

before you start, reread your post that got this started.....basically, does MU want a good teacher or a good coach.....why does it have to be one or the other? And, why do you care?

Get off your soapbox...no one rattled your chain by saying coaching was the priority....credit the post for getting the word out to people who read this forum...that's all it was intended to do....

Why does it have to be one or the other????? Because SO many times people are given teaching positions BECAUSE THEY CAN COACH. It's that simple. I just hope that MU doesn't make the mistake of hiring an inadequate chemistry teacher BECAUSE he knows something about wrestling. And then, when the coach quits, the district is stuck with a so-so chemistry teacher for the next 25 years. Then EVERYONE suffers. Fore-warned is fore-armed. Again, hire a chemistry teacher and hope he can coach, not the other way around.

Its 2010 and extremely hard to find any coaches or any teachers willing to do anything after school. A district should look for a great teacher, but also needs to look who will help the district in the most ways and who will not run out of the building at 3:00. The whole idea behind the teacher/coaches getting hired, isnt because they coach, its because those people run the schools and without them schools would have trouble in many areas, not just athletics. Think about any area schools and the most dedicate teachers/people in any of them are teacher/coaches. I am not saying every coach is a good teacher, but trust me they arent all bad teachers either. Realistically, they are some of the best in every school. Most have good rapport with the students, help more students in all facets of life, and very dedicated individuals. However, some coaches give teachers bad names by putting the sports in front of the education, but that doesnt happen often.

The post wasnt to find a good coach with a Chemistry degree, it was to simply get an individual who could help the district in many ways. Last time, I checked they dont just give teaching degrees out and those people work hard to achieve them. However, its alot harder to find a good teacher, that is willing to give a little extra to the students, school and district.

I know all teachers don't make good coaches. But most who have been around kids and care enough to be there, do a fine job...just an extention of blame. If Bobby isn't a star or the team loses, it's the coaches fault. Some coaches are better than others, but it's about that particular kid or groups of kids and whether they are willing to put the team ahead of their own egos no matter what the sport.
