Does MU want a real good coach who is an O.K. teacher, or a real good teacher who is an O.K. coach?

hey El-Moldo, why does it have to be one or another? Can't teaching and coaching work hand-in-hand?

Teaching and wrestling can go hand in hand. But we're talking about a CHEMISTRY teacher who can also coach wrestling. Good luck finding one who is good at both. We're not talking about history, phys ed, etc etc. It is far more important to teach chemistry to 75-100 students every school day, than to coach 15-20 wrestlers from Thanksgiving to March. Look for your chemistry teacher first, and coach second.

Wow....El-Moldo, I really don't think you have a clue on this one. It's rather demeaning to teachers and coaches that do quality work both inside and outside the classroom....what are athletics but an extension of the education process....?

I'm very sorry for the poor experiences you must have had...but it's that attitude that handcuffs potential coaches because school boards think in this way...I really don't think it has to be one or the other....

But, what would I know....

Academics first, athletics second. EVERYONE in a school has the potential to benefit from a good teacher. Only a select few benefit from a coach. What's demeaning about what I said concerning teaching and coaching? Selecting a good teacher ABOVE a good coach is necessary for the sake of the school. Coaching is secondary. Do you honestly think it is right to hire a good coach who is not a good teacher? If you happen to find one who is both, then wonderful. But don't compromise academics for athletics.
