My guess is.......the hatchet (tomahawk) was an offensive hand weapon, as were bow/ arrows, and spears. As a symbol of the peace, this offensive weapon was 'buried' in the ground, to show that it was no longer any threat. Other ways for Native Americans to symbolize the end of fighting were to "break" their bows, arrows, and spears. Anyone else?

Are you guys sure it didn't mean to bury it in someone's forehead?? If so, would that be before or after the scalping?

It just means to throw your weapons down.

This is a bunch of crap like Pale Rider said. THere was a study done either last football season or the one before where they asked a bunch of Native Americans from various tribes if they wanted the Redskins name changed or if they were offended by things like the "Seminoles", "Braves", etc. The results were even more resounding than I figured: almost all said NO. If not even Indians are upset over "Redskins"(which is way worse than Seminoles) what is the problem here? Most Native Americans say that they are very proud to be represented as warriors and braves, or as the "unconquerable spirit". I really don't know who comes up with this stuff.

I can see them being upset over "Redskins", but they aren't even upset over THAT. I heard IUP was also on that list, and aren't they the INDIANS? Plus they have a bear as a mascot! I guess that isn't stupid enough. Hey, we're the Johnstown Riverhawks, but our mascot is comet wearing sunglasses that is riding on the back of a dogsled. Dogs everywhere are pissed off!

If this is just a bunch of liberal crap like Pale Rider says, now you know why I repeatedly make it known that although I dislike Republicans I am very much not a Democrat, either.

It's stupid. The Florida State Seminoles are honoring Indians through their mascot, especially since they do so well on the field. I think any college university that has a Native American mascot is honoring them by singling them out for toughness, bravery, courage, and spirit, which they are hoping carries over to their sports team. Do the California Bears offend bears? Do the Ohio Bobcats diss on bobcats? Do the Bedford Bison and Chestnut Ridge Lions dishonor and disrespect buffalo and lions everywhere? This is nuts on the NCAA's part.

"Especially since they do so well on the field"? What if a team with an Indian mascot is a loser team? Does that make a difference?

I think when you realize that a program at any level only has one mascot, it is honorable for whatever they choose, whether that being a bear or a Souix warrior. That is the symbol that represents your team, like someone just said about toughness and whatnot. I dunno, maybe FSU should donate some money from these BCS games to the Seminole reservation? Might be a nice gesture. Money generally makes the most adament of foes shut the f*** up.

Teams are supposed to emulate the qualities of their mascot, that's why they select that mascot in the first place. Wolverines are fierce. Bears are strong. So Florida State should be good at basket-weaving and planting sugar cane. Doesn't seem to strike fear in the hearts of opponents, does it? And what the heck is a buckeye supposed to do. Give opponents a rash it they come in contact with it?????

Moldo, heres a paragraph from a site i found about the seminoles

This one, the Second Seminole War (1835-42), would be the longest, most costly, and the last of the US's Wars of Indian Removal fought east of the Mississippi River. It would be the first "guerilla"-style war fought by US troops. Not until the US entered a tiny country in Southeast Asia called Vietnam, more than a century later, would US soldiers fight again under such profoundly difficult conditions. The Natives were aided in their resistance by runaway slaves, who received protection from their Seminole allies (and, in some cases, owners) in return for a portion of the agricultural staples that they grew. These so-called "Black Seminoles" were fierce fighters who were also determined to preserve their freedom.

doesnt that emulate Florida State even the little bit?

A mascot also tells where a team is located or for another rerason special to that region. Houston Oilers, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, New York Knickenbockers (NY Knicks) Penn State NITTANY Lions.

So history has a lot to play in it too, right?
