Heard on the radio today......Truckers pay 500 bucks for a 200 gallon tankload of fuel. Many are lucky to clear 3 or 4 hundred per load, so they can't afford to run any more. Be prepared for a nationwide trucker strike between NOW, and Thanksgiving, because they will force the businesses to raise the rates the truckers get paid per mile so they can continue to drive. Guess what that translates into? Businesses will raise their prices, so they can keep their profit margins status quo, and the consumer can bend over and spread his cheeks one more time. And so it goes.

Of course Pale. Most all the goods that we buy in stores are shipped there by a truck driver. That means that an increase in the price of gas means that the store would probably have to pay more for shipping, so the price of the produce increases. Since petroleum is used in the manufacture of plastics, it's a double whammy, since the product is more expansive to make and to ship. But with many other products, since the materials are shipped to the plants, it's more business expense to make everything, thus, higher prices.
And the consumer, sad to say, has brought this upon himself. Look at how popular SUVs and even Hummers are. If those gas guzzlers were all Hondas that got 40 miles to the gallon, how much less do you think gas would be?

One also has to take in practical matters, as you said flyby, but I think many of the people out there that have Hummers or Jeeps can afford a more gas efficient vehicle that still meets their needs. I have to wonder how many got SUVs just because it's the 'in' thing.

Go to Florida or some flat lander state and look at all the 4 X 4's and SUV's. What the HEYNOW do THEY need them for? Around here people DO NEED them to get around in winter.

Or put higher "luxury taxes" on them, in the states that don't really need them.
