Interesting take on Weis' new contract

Is JoePa racist, too? He came out and was talking about black athletes and how they've changed the sport. Yes, they did. It's not racist at all. Just like Notre Dame signing Weis for 10 years. You know a great coach when you see them. Willingham was not great. He never will be great. Weis is great, and he'll be great for all 10 years that he's at Notre Dame.

In order to sign a person to a 10 year contract worth 3 million dollars a year, one must KNOW that they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, not just think that. Charlie Weis was 5-2 when he signed that contract extension. Tyrone Willingham went 8-0 and wasn't offered a contract extension. For all we know, based on records and games and nothing else, Charlie Weis could go 0-50 after today. He has no track record at the college level. It is true that he probably won't, but starting 5-2, while great, doesn't guarentee anything. If he goes 8-3, 9-2, and 11-0 in three succeeding seasons, THEN he has proven worthy of a contract extension.

IEATHAM055, TAE's comments aside, I asked a straight up question, and would like a straight up answer. Also, all else aside, there are many young athletes, whom, after verballing to a school (not that they didn't mean it at the time), de-commit and go somewhere else on signing day. It has been done many times, and will happen many more times. Verbals are great, but can be undone. Signing day cannot be undone, and BINDS the player to a one year term at that school. That is what matters as far as measuring recruiting classes.

I think there is more to this issue than just race. There will be a number of NFL coaches biting the dust when the season ends. I'm guessing that Weis has been getting calls from these teams to see if there is an interest. Based on what he did with the Patriots, he's a hot commodity. If ND didn't do a long term deal now, they may have lost him. It's a risk on their part, but apparently one they were willing to take. Willingham had a great start at ND, but he wasn't a threat to leave for more money to the NFL.

3 Super Bowl Championships and a 5-2 start gets you 10 years.

8-0 start with no major background gets you nothing. It's not racist. That's how it should be.

For the record, I do not think the ND contract extension is racist. I do however think it is foolish, and I think they are going to screw up the entire sport, but it was inevitable anyways. All they did was show that a top coach deserves more money, so now all these coaches can demand to make as much as someone like Weis. That hurts teams like the WAC and C-USA and the Sun Belt, who are already at a disadvantage in being able to attract a high-profile coach.

You guys can praise the Weis contract all you want, but you cannot avoid the facts here.

1. Notre Dame has played TWO good teams. That's giving them credit for team-strength at the time of the game. They have lost to both of those teams.

2. Charlie Weis has never beaten an opponent he was not supposed to defeat.

3. Notre Dame has a sub .500 home winning percentage, and has lost both games at home.

4. Yes, ND is doing well in verbals. Just like every year, just like under Holtz, Davie, and Willingham.

5. The only win ND has of any wuality is over a MIchigan team who most experts were proclaiming as being as over-rated as usual. Since then, UM has done well, though.

6. You did not defeat USC. You have 2 losses and are ranked in the top 10 beacsuse of who you are. That first loss has turned out to be against a bad MSU team.
