Downington East's Devlin can break state career passing record
11/10/2005,
The Associated Press:

(AP) — Downingtown East quarterback Pat Devlin needs 106 yards passing in Saturday night's P.I.A.A. Class (AAAA) playoff game against Pennsbury to become Pennsylvania's all-time leading high school passer.

The career record of 7,447 yards is held by Lakeland's Evan Kraky, who played from 1998-2001.

A Miami recruit, Devlin has passed for 1,806 yards this season despite missing two games with a shoulder injury. Going into the playoff game, he has completed 503 of 798 passes for 7,342 yards and 70 touchdowns with 30 interceptions.

Downingtown is 9-1 and Pennsbury is 8-2.

BIG NUMBERS:@ It would be difficult to find a player in the state with more impressive statistics that Duquesne senior Elijah Fields.

Fields has scored 22 touchdowns, 11 on plays of 60 yards or longer. He has 13 touchdown receptions, returned four punts for scores, rushed three times for touchdowns and returned an interception and a fumble for scores.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Fields averages 30.7 yards per reception on his 30 catches and has rushed for 376 yards, averaging 13.9 yards per carry. Defensively, he had three interceptions last week and, according to Duquesne coach Pat Monroe, "Brings the noise when he comes up and hits people."

"He's on the field for everything but punt coverage, kickoffs and extra points," Monroe added. "So he's had to run 60 or 70 yards if he wants to get a breather."

Monroe said opponents have stopped punting and kicking the ball to Fields, and have come up with some unique schemes on defense.

"Some coaches have become very creative with their defenses against us. I've seen things I never dreamed of," he said. "That's understandable because you can't play him straight up. If I was playing us, I'd be thinking of different ways to defense him."

Duquesne (10-0) will play Bishop Canevin (11-0) in a District #7 Class (A) semifinal Friday.

Pitt and West Virginia have offered scholarships to Fields.

NOT THIS SEASON:@ For only the second time in 19 seasons, Berwick is not participating in a postseason game. The Bulldogs were defeated by Hazleton 9-8 last weekend and failed to qualify for the P.I.A.A. Class (AAA) playoffs. Coach George Curry also said his team won't play in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

This has been a difficult season for Berwick, which began the season ranked No. #1 in Class (AAA) by the Patriot-News.

Curry kicked two players off the team two weeks ago for an undisclosed violation of team policy. Last week, four seniors who missed a practice quit the team after declining an undisclosed punishment.

HOOPS SIGNINGS:@ Penn State added frontcourt depth for the 2006-7 season by signing in-state recruits David Jackson and Andrew Jones III.

Jackson, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound forward from Farrell, is projected to be a forward but has played all five positions at Kennedy Catholic High School. He averaged almost 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists a game last year as a junior.

Penn State describes Jackson as a slasher who shoots well off the dribble.

Playing for Abington Friends School in Philadelphia, the 6-foot-8, 190-pound Jones averaged 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks last year.

"Andrew possesses great athletic ability and his explosiveness around the basket is outstanding," Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said. "He affects the game in many ways."

Jackson and Jones signed on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.
