Forest Hills vs. South Park Preview
Re: Forest Hills vs. South Park Preview
There's POT involved somewhere I bet. Anyway, I once had a job in a women's shoe store. Got caught looking up women's dresses. The boss told me if I did it again I would be fired. My next job was in a grocery store.

I hear what TAE is saying, but I think he took it a little far.
I think any college graduate will admit that they learn 90% of their field during in field training. However, to get to that training portion you have to prove and earn that position. School is hard work, and it takes an individual who has a lot of character and determination to succeed and get good grades. Then it takes even a more determined individual to get good grades, be on Student government, and show up on time for work. Not everyone can be successful at any job. The education process weeds people out along the way, and then the interview process does the rest.
I don't know of ANY high school players from our area that live off reputation. In Forest Hills, being a good player might land you a job taking care of the Adams Township Little League field, but it isn't a sure bet as in getting you hired on the Apprentice.
I personally think the only place a good athletic background helps you is in the Business world. People in Business like athletes because it shows you can work together and like have good leadership skills. But even that isn't going to guarantee you a job.
BTW...this board is the most fun when the Pot is stirred, I know I don't believe half the crap I post sometimes, but that makes it even more fun.

A college degree is just a piece of paper, but a very important one to have. Some of the dumbest people I have met had that piece of paper and got good jobs because of it. While others who were more intelligent, but did not have the degree, could not even get an interview.
Ask Hollywood if his athletic ability got him anywhere. At the very least it got him a free education which gives him a great head start on the rest of us.

That reminds me of a guy I know with a PhD (of course a liberal to boot). His elderly wife broke her leg and needed a walker. The walker wouldn't fit in the trunk of his Buick, so he went to the car dealership and purchased a car with a larger trunk. The walker fit perfectly in the new car. He bragged about this to his brother-in-law, who had an eigth grade education. His brother-in-law then proceeded to show him that with 2 quick snaps, the walker folded up nicely and would've fit in a Yugo.
College degrees are important, and I'm glad I have mine. But it doesn't grant you common sense.
I've always said that in my profession, anyone with common sense could learn it, college degree not needed. However, I would never hire anyone without one, unless of course they had the work experience to prove they could do the job.
On a similar topic, I was pretty good with algebra in high school (15 years ago). Since then, I have yet to use it in my job or in my normal life. I probably couldn't do an algebra problem now to save my life.

I use Algebra all the time .... oh wait .... I use it when teaching my kids ALGEBRA.
LionPride, don't be too hard on yourself. I, to, always seemed to do well in mathematics. Loved numbers. You would be surprised how many times you have used algebra without even realizing it. Also goes for geometry and trig. I never enjoyed English but alas, during my career had the opportunity to work six years as a technical writer. It sometimes surprises me how often I catch typos in the media. Don't even mention the message boards. Not enough time, lol.
I am happy to see that responses to the post that had prompted them have been on the positive side.

I don't even have time to smoke pot. I'm busy trying to explain to all of you why you are simple-mided bozo idiots. And Opinionguy, if you truly believe that a good FH player will only get a job taking care of the little league field, you better take a look around you. There's never strings pulled, right?
Why do you need to "prove yourself" to people that your future employer has no contact with whatsoever? I'd much rather have a guy who was willing to work hard than some kid fresh out of school with rosy cheeks and driving his dad's car. You "prove yourself" by making your bones with life experience, not by getting a piece of a paper that a lot of times you can't even wipe your **** with.
Maybe things weren't the same in 1958 when you all went to college, but it's just a business.

If you are talking about FH teachers being former football players. Yes there have been a few hired recently, but they all had to pay their dues before getting hired with the exception of Justin Beyer. And he got in at the right time when Kuddy went to Admiral Perry.
Coach Brez subbed for a few years. Coach Bob didn't get hired right off the bat. And Justin Myers is yet to get a job at Forest Hills.
All of the above mentioned were highly qualified with a piece of paper stating they could do their jobs. They just didn't walk out of the lockerroom up to the District office and get hired.
Anytime, anywhere you are an insider you have the inside track to getting a job. I know I'd personally rather have an FH grad teaching my kids at Forest Hills rather then an outsider. Just because I know they've been brought up through a good system. Not to say there aren't better systems out there, but I know what goes on in Sidman. Ask any teacher in this area where they would like to teach if they had the oppurtunity. 80% would say FH, and it's not because of the pay.
Again, I agree with you to a point, but you have to do something with your life besides play a sport if you want to be successful. And stating otherwise sends a very poor message to the youth of today.
