Re: Dear Congress:
Flea.....well thought out but I personally see some flaws. Not taking a conference champion then taking not only the higher rated team (Miami) but also the team they just beat for the conf. title (VT)????
You have to take conf. champs...they earn it on the field which is what a playoff system is all about. Now your starting a playoff but taking qualifiers from a rating system instead of "on the field" winners when possible??
Hey, how many 4 loss NFL teams will play for the Super Bowl? How many 4th and 5th place teams will get in the Big Dance this March? Are they legit Super Bowl and NCAA Title contenders? Probably not but they get in. So I see nothing wrong with a 4 loss team who beat 11 other teams fair and square on the field for the title getting in.
Will be interesting to follow the congressional hearings that begin today.

Flea you can not pick teams due to injuries because you are not really sure how that would effect the team. Look at Penn State for example they said losing D-Will would cost them at least one game down the stretch when really there was never a point where having him would changed the game at all.

Head Roadie, that is true, but both Miami and Virginia Tech had better in conference records than Florida State. I don't like putting a team in any sort of playoff that has four losses, especially when there are so many teams available with two losses or less.
abpk, You're right about Penn State, and you're right that it didn't really affect their level of play, but one also has to take position into account too. An injured QB is much more likely to shake things up than an injured WR. If M-Rob were injured, PSU would have a very tough row to hoe, and it would affect how they played a lot.
Actually, I've had this on my mind, but for some reason didn't post it, but why not have a points system similar to high school teams? In other words, a win over a BCS conference garners 100 points plus however many wins (10 per win) the other team has. Mid majors would be 80 points plus wins, and I-AA would probably be around 50 or so. I'm not sure about the finer details (the exact number of points), or if teams should be penalized for losses. But it would generally go by number of points per game since there are some teams that play 12 games, and most play 11. Anybody have suggestions for the finer details, or any comments on this?

Re: Dear Congress:
A few alterations: First, Sun Belt teams will be worth 60 points per win plus ten more for each win the team has. In other words, beating Arkansas State would be worth 120 points (since they are 6-5).
I-AA wins will still be counted as the ten points per win formula (Texas Tech is still 9-2 and worth 190 points for a win), but in counting the quality points of a team that has played I-AA teams, the I-AA teams will be thrown out entirely. In other words, Texas Tech will be calculated as a 7-2 team that has played nine games, and it's quality rating will be based on that.
If I can get the calculations done before the bowl games, I'll give it a whirl during the 28 bowl games and see how accurate of a system it is.
