Farrell H.S. Is Leaving Town...

Farrell Votes to Leave W.P.I.A.L.
1/12/2006 -

In a move that has been rumored for months, the Farrell School Board voted earlier this week for their athletic teams to leave the W.P.I.A.L. and move to District #10. The move would end a long-time association between the Steelers and District #7.

Rumors started flying during football season, following a Sharon-Farrell football game that drew a huge crowd. Farrell Athletic Director Chuck Branca told the Sharon Herald it would be a bold step to move. The Steelers played in the Keystone Football League in the mid-80’s against District #10 schools, while remaining a W.P.I.A.L. member in all other sports. The Steelers rejoined the W.P.I.A.L. in football shortly after the formation of the state playoff system.

Farrell would likely be placed in a region with other nearby schools, such as Kennedy Catholic, Sharpsville and West Middlesex, which would cut down on travel time and expenses, especially in football. The Steelers would also be able to play Sharon on a yearly basis.

The move would take effect with the 2006-07 season and must be approved by both the W.P.I.A.L. Board of Control and the District #10 committee.

The move is not a done deal. Last week, after approval from both Erie McDowell High School and the W.P.I.A.L., District #10 officials refused to allow the Trojans to leave District #10 and join the W.P.I.A.L. for football only.

In a related story, the upset win by the Summit Academy Knights at Farrell on Tuesday night was the first section loss that wasn't a forfeit by the Steelers at E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium since Farrell dropped down to Class (AA) in "1994".
