84 Lumber Classic switching dates
FARMINGTON – The 84 Lumber Classic will move from September to June beginning in 2007 as part of a new six-year agreement with the PGA Tour, tournament officials announced Friday.
The 3-year-old tournament at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa, about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was started by 84 Lumber founder Joe Hardy, a billionaire who has made no secret of his desire to make his tournament a more high-profile event.
The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 11-17 this year. Next year, it will be held June 18-24, a week after the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, just outside of Pittsburgh, and will be televised by CBS.
“This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication by many people,” Hardy said in a statement. “We took a tournament no one seemed to want and in three years turned it into one of the best stops on the tour and we believe we have earned our move to June.”
Hardy has spared no expense to attract the biggest names in golf to the tournament. He spent millions on changes to the course in the last few years after golfers complained it wasn’t challenging enough. He also built a luxury RV park and routinely had gifts waiting each night for golfers after they finished their rounds.
In 2004, Hardy offered golfers eligible for the American Express Championship in Ireland up to six seats on a non-stop, round-trip charter to the tournament aboard a 747 equipped only with first-class seats. The trip was free – at a cost of about $40,000 per golfer – as long they played the week before at the 84 Lumber Classic.
Hardy said he’ll continue to use the tournament as an opportunity to raise money, and believes the new date will help in that effort. Since 2003, the tournament has raised $4.2 million for charity, he said.
