Boys Basketball Teams To Watch in District # 5 /6
Boys' Basketball Teams to Watch..............
Below are the top 1-3 teams in each conference in Districts #5 & 6:
Sideling Hill League............................
McConnellsburg (10-3): Although McConnellsburg is 10-3 overall, they are only 5-3 in the league and have fallen to fifth place. They've lost 3 of their last 5 games although won big last time out against Hyndman (66-23). They end the week with a game against Fannett-Metal on Friday.
Southern Fulton (12-4): SF's 8-1 league is good enough for them to move into first place of the SHL. They've won their last four in a row including games against Hancock and Tussey Mountain this week. They play Forbes Road on Friday.
Chestnut Ridge (12-5): The Lions are right behind SF with an 8-2 league record. C.R. has a seven-game winning streak and are in action Friday against Hyndman.
WestPAC.....................................................................................
Conemaugh Valley (15-2): The Blue Jays, coached by veteran Garry Lupek are having a great season. They are 6-0 in the league. C.V. has won "13" in a row and are one of the better Class (A) teams in all the state. They are back in action on Friday at Ferndale.
Portage (13-3): Travis Kargo's Mustangs are 4-1 in WestPAC play. They are at North Star on Friday.
Windber (13-4): The Ramblers are 4-2 in the league but they've lost their last two games. There next game is North Star on 1/31. Injuries are the plague.
Shanksville-Stonycreek (12-4): S-S is undefeated in league play in the WestPAC with a 5-0 record. They've won eight in a row and will play Shade Friday.
Shade (11-4): The Panthers are in second place in the southern division and only lost one game in league play. As mentioned above they play Shanksville Stonycreek. They've won five in a row.
MAC 1...................................................................................
Altoona (13-3): Kraig Hetz' Mountain Lions are 3-1 in the MAC. They are in action Saturday against Shaler of the Pittsburgh City League. Hollidaysburg, Hempfield (WPIAL) and Frankford (Philadelphia) are the only losses on Altoona's schedule this year.
Hollidaysburg (14-1): The Tigers are sitting nicely in first place in the MAC-1 and are looking like one of the better (AAAA) teams in Western Pennsylvania. They're only loss is to State College earlier this year. They play Indiana Saturday.
State College (11-6): Drew Frank's Little Lions are on a bit of a slide as of late. State High is 2-2 in their last four games. They beat Central Mountain and Williamsport but lost to Franklin and Altoona. They play Pleasant Valley on Saturday.
MAC 2..........................................................................................................
Bald Eagle Area (12-5): A great run has put the Eagles in first place in the MAC-2. BEA has rattled off wins over Tyrone, Lewistown, Huntingdon and Indian Valley to ascent to the top of the chart. They end their week on Friday against Phillipsburg-Osceola.
Bellefonte (12-5): The Red Raiders, a 6-(AAA) squad, are keeping pace with B.E.A. Bellefonte has won three in a row and will finish their week against fellow 6-(AAA) Huntingdon.
Heritage...............................................................................................
Blairsville (17-2): The Bobcats are the #1 Class (A) team in the state for a reason, they're undefeated in Heritage play and their two losses are to two very good W.P.I.A.L. squads in Greensburg-Salem (AAA) and Jeannette (AA). The losses were the first games of the season so they are on a fantastic "17"-game winning streak and they've score at least "90" four times, including the last two times out and surpassed "100" points once. They finish the week against Purchase Line on Friday.
Marion Center (14-5): Although the Stingers are doing their best to keep pace with Blairsville, they still remain in second with a 12-2 league record. They've already lost to Blairsville once and don't face them again until the last game of the regular season. MC has rattled off five wins in a row and finish the week against Northern Cambria.
Juniata Valley League...................................................................................
Penns Valley (11-4): PV is tops in the league with an 8-1 conference record. They finished out last week with an easy win over Claysburg Kimmel 61-36. They play Moshannon Valley and Williamsburg this coming week.
West Branch (9-9): WB may be hovering around .500 overall but with only two league losses, that is good enough for third place in the JVL standings. They lost last time out against Mo Valley 72-61 and have games this coming week against Juniata Valley, Mount Union and Harmony.
Southern Huntingdon (14-3): The Rockets are in second place in the JVL. They have a better overall record than the above mentioned West Branch and have the same number of conference losses but they have more conference wins. SH beat CK last time out by six. They have games this week against Williamsburg, McConnellsburg and Mo Valley.
LHAC-1........................................................................................................
Forest Hills (11-8): It is a very tight race for Section (1) champ and what looks like the right to play Johnstown for the L.H.A.C. title (more on that below). The Rangers have kept paced while the Red Devils of C.C. have fallen as of late. F.H. has three big games coming up this week, Somerset, Cambria Heights and Penn Cambria.
Central Cambria (14-4): The Red Devils have won the last two times out, but it was the prior four-game losing streak that may have upset their chances of an L.H.A.C. Section #1 title. To keep pace with F.H., they must hope for the Rangers to falter and they must handle their business against non-L.H.A.C. Huntingdon and sectional foes Central and Bedford.
LHAC-2...............................................................................................................
Johnstown (16-2): John Fuschino's Trojans would appear to have Section #2 and a spot in the L.H.A.C. title game all sewn up. They are 11-0 in the conference. A win over Westmont this week will all but wrap it up as it will mean that are 2-0 against them and McCort in section play. J.H.S. will finish out the week on Friday on Bishop Carroll.
Westmont (14-4): Dave Roman Jr.'s club is doing their best to keep pace with the Trojans but they have to not only handle their business against the Trojans but hope for some JHS misfortune as well. Aside from the big game against J-town they finish the week against Richland. The Hilltoppers have won their last five games and are 8-1 since getting shellacked by the Trojans in early January.
Bishop McCort (12-5): Pat Hollern's Crushers are a skilled bunch, led by big man Pete O'Connor. However their hopes of getting back to the LHAC title game are pretty much over as they sport 4 section losses. They will be a tough team to beat come district playoffs in (AA) though. The Crushers have Bishop Carroll and Somerset this coming week.
Moshannon Valley League.........................................................................................
Harmony (14-3): Before I talk about the Owls' recent performance I must correct something. In past posts I've referred to Harmony as an independent but they are actually members of a small conference known as the Moshannon Valley League. The MVL consists of Harmony, three teams that are also members of the JVL (West Branch, Moshannon Valley and Glendale) and District 9 Curwensville. Special thanks to Assistant Coach Matthew Woods and some of his players as they emailed me on this. Thanks for reading the blog guys!
The Owls were named as a "Team to watch" in the most recent Patriot-News rankings and with good reason. They have won their last three contests and 11 of the last 13 thanks in part to Christopher Preister and Caleb Rohrabaugh who are averaging 13.9 and 10.5 PPG respectively. Next up for Harmony are Glendale (2/1) and West Branch (2/3).

I'm not quite sure where you got your information from, but West Branch is only 7-7 in the JVL. With victories over Claysburg-Kimmel, Glendale and Williamsburg twice and a lone win over Moshannon Valley. Their losses came to Southern Huntingdon twice, Penns Valley, Juniata Valley, Mount Union, Moshannon Valley and Bellwood-Antis.
The Green Hornets of Juniata Valley currently own third place in the JVL.
