Westmont Girls Make A Statement ...

Post by THE CHOPS »

Hilltoppers travel well....

Westmont Hilltop impressive in trip to Trinity's backyard

Looking into the crystal ball and attempting to predict what happens in March can be dangerous.

The weekly girls' basketball state rankings are based on the current lay of the land. There is no looking down the line and trying to predict what's going to take place. Boy, is that dangerous.

So what about Westmont Hilltop?

Watching the Hilltoppers in last year's Class (AA) state championship game against Delone Catholic, a game they lost, it was pretty clear they would have some elements in place for this season.

After getting a up-close and personal peek on Saturday, it's safe to say coach Jodi Hillegass certainly has a few elements worth taking note of.

This is a dynamite team. There isn't a glaring weakness, and the Hilltoppers have everything you need to make a run at winning a PIAA title.

Yet this week they are only No. #2 in Class (AA).

Oh, the temptation to move them straight from No. #3 to the top spot was indeed great. The Hilltoppers traveled to Trinity last Saturday after playing the night before and took out the rested Shamrocks, ranked No.# 2, by "16" impressive points.

But there is one hard rule about moving a team out of the No. #1 spot. You must lose. So Greensburg Central Catholic stays in the top spot.

However, be advised there is no wiggle room. Drop one game and Westmont Hilltop is the new king of a deep Class (AA) pack.

So as of today, the Hilltoppers are rated as the second-best Class (AA) team in the state.

Unless something dramatic changes, something says when its all said and done they'll be one notch higher.

Westmont is that good.

Only four new teams cracked the top "10" this week.

And after making Trinity look very ordinary, coupled with wins over Altoona, Oxford and Harrisburg, all in a span of nine days, District #3 gets a Class (AAAA) team in the top "10" in Central Dauphin.

Right now, the Rams deserve to be included.

District #10 Saegertown (A), undefeated Eisenhower (AA) out of the same district and Lansdale Catholic from District #1 join CD as top-10 infants.

Speaking of Class (AAA), Hopewell is ranked first. But it's because the requirement is to assign a number to each 10. The reality is, any one of the top five could be there.

Hopewell is the pick for now. But St. Basil, the P.I.A.A. runner-up, undefeated Nanticoke and Lancaster Catholic along with lurking Allentown Central Catholic, are all in the same boat. So there could be plenty of changes at the top in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned.

Good post.

After watching the Westy girls several times this year now, I have two conclusions. When they are clicking, they are a runaway freight train. When they are struggling, they are still a runaway freight train.

The girls seemed a little rusty last night, some sloppy plays and struggled a bit from the three point line, and were pummeled with whistles, but still beat the number seven team in the state (Bishop McCort) by a solid ten.

The state final last year was a heartbreaker, Westy was up on Delone with time winding down but just seemed to get flustered.

That team is the real deal, no doubt about it. Competing with a 6'2" girl under the rim is a tall order. The Kelly Britcher girl seems at times like she has about six hands, very quick and a real natural basketball player. She can make the best of them look silly.

----

A sidenote ... watched the Johnstown - Bishop McCort game and Jtown seemed to struggle a good bit, despite winning the game. They are definately much better than they played. The Pete O'Connor kid from McCort impressed the hell out of me. Anybody know if he is a descendant of Joe O'Connor, the basketball and track star from JHS circa 1920s?

Just as Chops predicted ...

Greensburg Central Catholic lost ... and now ...

The January 30th state rankings have the Westmont girls now at the #1 spot.

Bishop McCort fell out of the top ten, I don't know about that one, they only lost to the now #1 team, why does that knock them out of the top ten? Trinity and Delone Catholic are still in the top ten, both have been beaten by the Lady Hilltoppers this season.

Seen Mccort the other day at Richland and they are now playing an all guard game. They are struggling now against teams that they easily beat earlier by twenty plus points. You need a big girl/low post girl in the game to keep defenses honest, and I don't mean a 5'6" guard in the post. If not,all you got to do is defend the perimeter."LIVE BY THE THREE...DIE BY THE THREE"
