Re: Up to #5 at Rivals...
I've been hearing all this talk about how great PSU's recruiting class is. Then, today, I watched a little of ESPNU's coverage of Signing Day and PSU had the 8th rated class. This was just above Ohio State at #9. Now, the #8 class in the country is good, and for middle of the pack program like Penn State, it is very good. Iowa had a similarly good class last year following some success. However, I do not see this as any proof that PSU is back - as I have been hearing. Like Wisconsin, Purdue, and many other middle of the pack programs they had a good year, but Michigan and Ohio State are still the standard bearers for the conference.

I don't understand why people are making such a big deal of this season's success being evidence of them being "back". Over the past few years, PSU has had some downers but they were still a play or two away from winning a lot of those games. It's not like they were getting blown out. They had offensive troubles. Defense was usually very, very solid. And yes, I know, 6-4 versus Iowa.
As far as recruiting, the Lions never left. Therefore they can't really be "back". They always had solid classes.

They always will have solid classes. The only problem JoePa wasn't getting the potential out of his top recruits. If you don't get the full potential, you don't win the close games. Now he's finally getting it out of his players. Now they're winning ball games. They are "back". They did go away. That's why there was such a hype this year when they played as well as they did.

I complained about the playcalling before they ever got "bad", so I kinda just see it as though all they needed was a new playbook.
...And Jay Paterno not calling the plays.

The class is still barely in the top 10. I wouldn't get too anxious about it. Until these players step on the field and start playing, it really doesn't matter.
